Catch can was jet washed thoroughly through every possible hole & can assure nothing was left in there. Brand new filter too.

There can’t be much in the can itself as there is no sign of water/oil on the see-through tube on the side of the can.

I'm worried about driving it & causing more damage. But i just want to get better oil in the as i can imagine its not liking this mineral stuff at all lol.

ok just asking here is the engine got 750 miles or so done on it so far .did you just see this from the breather last night or was it happing al the time when the engine is gettin run in

Sounds like the turbo has given up. Whip the down pipe off and have a nosey and see how it looks.

But i agree with Rick, its not a headgasket problem, you would know if it was anyway.

Done 50 miles then changed the oil & filter, then 250 with oil & filter change, then im about 110 miles into the last 250..

1st time i saw it last night mate. Was dry all other times i checked under the hood.

I can still hear the turbo spooling, but is quieter. Just dosent seem to boost much tho, not that i have put my foot down or anything, it just usually spools up from the word go thats all.

dont give up buddy, i cannot wait to see you car. just take it easy for now till you have everything sorted.

Trying not to mate, but im going bald from the stress from this car lol

Lewis check the oil if they have mix with water.(headgasket)
If not then probably its moisture as Ricky said.
About the turbo that not boosting..remove the pipe and give it a turn on the blades to see if it moves free or have any resistance. If even slight resistand is felt then you need at least a turbo rebuilt or a new item.

vapour and oil oil is dependent on conditions outside etc etc etc etc.

my catch can taken off my car 3 weeks ago when i changed the inlet manifold gasket, had loads of water in it.

this is not because a headgasket had gone, but caused by vapour from hot oil, the hot vapour cools down quickly and turns into water.

this vapour is normally sucked back through the inlet mani and burnt in the combustion process this is the reason for the pcv valve.

when the pcv valve and the standard recirc breather are removed this no longer occurs.

ditto, my motor was the same moisture and sludge in the catch tank is nothing unusual.

if the cars not boosting right the only way this would be caused by the headgasket is if the car had a severve misfire which obviously you would hear/feel

defo a turbo failure imo

i totally agree with this.. brilliant info... if it was headgasket mate your water level would be down and would be puffing out with smoke... id take off the cat and look at the exhaust turbine blades.. they should be light brown in colour from the heat.. if they black or oily its your turbo seals mate... no harm checking the throttle body for oily deposits 2..

It can boost very well if the head gasket is gone between cylinders..I have a friend few days back that he had the same failure with the hg. cylinder 1,2 100 /120 psi but the car was running perfect at idle boosting perfect..no water consuption or mix with oils..no overheating just a lazy engine..
So it means that even on two cylinder you may have no missfires and still idle well but the head gasket can have went..

Thanks for everyones replies!! Much appreciated.

I found out it had been overfilled with oil from a garage that fixed my leaks, which would explain the smoke i suppose.
Cleaned out the catch tank & breather and changed the oil and filter for 5w40 fully synethtic stuff & went out for a drive.

Seems to be boosting just fine! No smoke anymore & engine pulls very very well. Only sticking to .8 bar until i get her mapped in the future. Seems really quick anyway,.

Happy days... fingers crossed it stays like it :drive:

Rep'd you all

Im glad to hear that she will be staying :) such a lovely example of an 82 would be a shame to give up after you have come so far!! good luck dude

no it's not.

you cant grasp whether it's headgasket or not from that pic.

oil vapours mix with air, air carries moisture, and this makes the thick white sludge on oil catch cans.

some catch cans have a mesh in to stop it from clogging up the oil breather.

my car has the same thing and there is nothing wrong with it,

my mates mini also has the same thing and there nothing wrong with that either.

Agreed, when i had only 1 breather and the pcv on the top cover, my catch can used to fill up half way every bloody week with oil vapour.. which is annoying.. This was after the rebuild a couple of years ago.. we drew the conclusion that it was down to the total seal rings keeping everything the way its meant to be... but the problem had to be taken care of...

So what i did is, i took the top cover to mr zisco, and he made 3 new breathers (iirc 8mm each one) & a custom catch can, also the catch can doesnt just have the normal single breather, but what chris did instead was drill several 6mm holes on the back to aid air to escape as much as possible, whilst still collecting anything that might come out from the top cover... After this was done, the oil vapour vanished completely & the engine felt like it was revving much more freely..

In the pic black_mamber posted though i dont like the look of the white foamy stuff.. it could be that the breather is clogged and the water vapour isnt escaping from the engine & getting mixed with the oil.. ie uv got water in ur oil!!!! get rid of it asap, or it could turn into a disaster mate.

**edit** only just seen uv sorted it out mate.. glad to hear it was nothing serious.. though if i was u id still have a go at what i suggested above, it really helps the engine breath much more easily! :)

Thanks Kon, your advice is very much appreciated

I will look into getting a better breathing system sorted asap. :)

whatever ya do dont give up on this car dude, it looks so awesome and its gonna be amazing when finished.

i know exactly how u feel with the stress. i had a few problems with little leaks etc with my old glanza and the stress actually made me lose weight lol. i was in an even worse position cus i didnt know how to do anything enginewise.
