International weird word/phrase thread

We have members from anywhere and everywhere some shy some not so shy.
How about sharing with the forum some interesting, weird and wonderful words or phrases that exist in your country/city/county which are unique to that location.

The Malta boys for example, is there a phrase you use often that when translated directly in to English makes no sense or sounds odd?

those of you who traveled to Japan or are in Japan, anything we should or should not say if we find ourselves on the streets of Tokyo?

I know Dublin has lots of slang and odd sayings so I am sure we will hear some from the Dublin members, as for the Irish folk from outside Dublin hahaha I have heard some of the funniest sayings and phrases in Ireland that just make me burst out laughing when I think of them.

So what have you got to say?

well i live in scotland, but i have been working in shetland and i cant understand a word any of them say.
muckle=big
peerie=small
yonder= over there
that is just a few of words that come to my head, but these hillybillys speak weird and far to fast, it is so bad that ive had to get a apprentice from the island to translate and speak slower for me :p

^^ lol when you get a good rough Scottish accent its pretty tough to decipher!

I only really started thinking about this since I lived outside of Ireland and people have to keep asking me to repeat myself.

I say "yonder" all the time :p

Some other phrases that I never really realised I use but apparently do, a lot
-get up ta fuck
-sure jaysis
-thats a load of me bollix
-dyin for a roaster (a beer)
-poxy thing e.g. "I hate chevys they are poxy oul things"
-haype e.g. "thats a haype of shite"
-Locked = very drunk
-buckled = very drunk
-balloons = very drunk
-balubas = very drunk
-skuttered = very drunk

A good country one they used to use when I was in school in county Offaly back in the day was
-Make bits of him. You would often hear a football manager shout at one of his team "go on make bits of him" thus encouraging his player to hack the shit out of one of the opposition.

Most common one used a lot here is 'whitey' comes from when someone smokes to much weed and gets sick aka pulling a whitey. But now the word is being used when something bad happens like say if the car breaks down 'such a fucken whitey' or when someone tells you something bad the response is usually 'whitey'!

Hows your cat.com -hello

gobshite - well we all know

upcasten - making a scene

So much more cant think right now lol

Lmao, the Scottish ones are great, funny to hear when I go home:

bawbag - ballbag, used like "what a fuckin bawbag"
jakey - scumbag/tramp etc, used effectively as "fuckin jakey bastard"
glaekit -stupid person, used like "useless glaekit cunt"

Some local NI words

Clean rotten (NI) - manky (SCO) - dirty (ENG)

Ahh can't think of any more at the moment

one that stumped me with you lot is "Craic" and when I heard it in person, I was seriously astounded by the seemingly profuse crack cocaine addiction spreading.

Only to be disappointed to learn it meant "banter". Infact, when I first came to the UK in 2001 I felt like I spelt another language (some still tell me that), and I still struggle to understand some terms.

There's far too many literal translations in Italian that simply don't work, its amusing to see what movie titles are renamed to in Italian cinemas - one that comes to mind is Agent Smart, in Italy they called it "Agente Smart: Casino Totale" (Casino in Italy means a Casino, or a mess). I also like "Vaffanculo", which means "Go fluff yourself", but would literally translate to "Go do a butt"

Knock her back doors in
= Similar to Balls Deep but to give a lass a right good seeing to.
