not declaring mods

Silly boy Colin.

Why not just insure them in the first place???

I agree with folk above, if you havnt insured them, then you were driving about with no insurance.
Is your mate claiming?

People that dont declare mod's are the one's that add to our insurance going up...
Yes it may put ya insurance up a little but its best to declare every thing on the car, that way you are fully covered..
If a insurance company can find a way of not paying they will..

Some lad crashed into my car which was an XR2i with a FRST lump, there insurance company tryed to not pay by saying i had the wrong engine in but i had fully insured it as an FRST engine transplant so they had to pay, but if i had insured it as an XR2i for cheaper insureance i would of lost everything an i would of been done for insurance fruad..

So it is best to insure everything so at least they know what they are coming to look at in the case of a claim..

Sorry to hi-jack the thread - When I bought the Mk2 golf gti it had a different set of headlights and a single light debaged grill, so I insured it with them on, I will be taking there off in 5mins, do I need to notify them that they've been removed? (will it make a difference to the price of my ins?)

Are you replaceing them with the standered one's???

It is best to let them know so they know what the car looks like in the case of a claim an they come out to view car...

I dont see the point in having an insurance if any modifcations are not declared. As soon as you alter the car and not inform them of it your insurance is void and your paying for nothing, just keeping your fingers crossed that the fuzz dont pull you up.

If a driver with a modded car crashed into you with his mods not declared I think you would be pretty pissed that their policy would not pay for your damage because its null and void.

I think a lot of people dont declared mods and its the risk they take when doing it.

Lesson learned the hard way I think m8.

You're right, in that situation Lee was a twat for not declaring mods.

Wooo Sam anymore of ur lip an il have to take it off :p haha

Came back sound all my mods are declared down to the stripped out rear :)

I was caught speeding which i do believe i was a twat but as there was no signs on a dual carriageway in Telford on a road i had never been on before i was happy to let the police follow me for over 2 miles at 70 mph. Until i saw a sign to say 60 before they did actually pull me as soon as i started braking :(

Guess i was quite unlucky tbf

Cheers Stu, will give them a call when I get a chance, just changed them over!

I know it sounds silly as its just a set of light's, but you have changed it from how it came out factory so if insurance come out to see car for any reson its best they know what they will be looking at...

I got pulled in my old XR2i which was heavely modded near to show condition, after a call to my insurance there was nothink the police could do as all was covered...

Most insurance company's arn't really worryed about mod's an it wont affect ya price but they do like to know what's on the car...

Hey all, very interesting subject! I have a few questions if you don't mind!

Do I need to tell them that I've got Mintex pads rather than standard? and EBC discs??? or braided lines? will that void the insurance???? How about different to standard oil? or different stereo??? or non standard air filter and oil filter????? The tyres would be an interesting issue as well

X2

Pad's an disc's - yes as it can be seen as a performance upgrade(better breaking mean's you can go faster as stop quicker at speed)
Oil - NO...
Stereo - No unless you want it covered under your insurance if its stolen..
Non standered air filter - Yes as its seen as a performance upgrade...
Tyers - Dont be daft as we all need tyers no matter the make of them..

If its wheels size then YES...

DISCLAIMER - please note its 3.30am i'v been drinking an cant sleep so any of the above is wrong or gets you in trouble its not my fault..:p

DISCLAIMER 2 -but pretty sure the above is ok to go by..

Going back 10-15 years I could understand why people did not declare modifications, there were much fewer companies who would cater for modified car.

These days there is a lot of choice, there is even an insurer assoiciated with yuor club who specialises in modified cars, there really is no excuse.

I dread to think how many people anre running around with void insurance through undeclared mods, not insuring at a GT Turbo etc etc

Wise up guys!!

A few months ago a friend of mine, cooked his brakes and crashed in to another car. The result was J5000 bill for repairs! He has an imported Sport type car! - The insurance company never asked him about the mods, he never declared any mods, he got paid the J5000 for car repair with no questions asked! In fact he had at least 20 mods done to his car!

So may be is down to the insurance company??????

its not down to the broker, its your responsibility to declare your mods

x2.
when i took out my latest policy i had a seperate piece of paper for all my mods! couldn't fit them in the space provided on the form! but i know for sure that i am totally covered, would much rather pay a bit more on the policy than get slapped with a no insurance ticket or such like.

as mentioned above by sky, there are a lot of companies out there now that cater for modded cars and there are good deals to be had if you look.
at the end of the day though its all down to whoever is taking the policy out, if you choose not to declare your mods don't be surprised if and when you get found out

I'm pretty sure whatever policy you have, third party or fully comp, that the third party will be covered in the event of it being your fault. They just won't pay out for repairs to you or your car. Saying it's "void" is not entirely true, Insurers are legally obliged to cover 3rd parties.

If the other party is responsible, it doesn't matter if the mods are declared.

All my mods are declared, I just don't see the point of not putting them on

I wouldnt go as far as saying your insurance is VOID if any mods are undeclared. Thats just stupid to say. As i know loads of people that have not declared and got payed out. Some on the other hand have been unlucky. Its a risk. Its not Void. Its sure fuck better to have insurance with some mods undeclared then to drive around without any at all!!

Im basing my opinion on what ive known and seen. Not about statistics etc. Now before i get a comment back read what ive wrote carefully, i havent said whats wrong or right or what you should or shouldn't do. Just specifically about the void part.

Actually i would say what ive said is a fact not an opinion as its been proven.

All my mod's are declered and named, as i have a like for like policey so in the event of a crash all parts are replaced for what is on there..

It well worth paying the extra dolla for...

They'll take you to court to recover what they had to pay though, and they will win. At best it's breach of contract as your car isn't what you said it was, at worst it's fraud.
