why would you not reccomend the mocal thermo plate wallace???

It doesn't let the oil warm up properly, the way it works it always flows some oil to the cooler and on mine (with a normal sized 16 row cooler) the oil wouldn't get above 75c without giving it some. If I'd known this I would've got an inline thermostat, as it is now i've had to loop the hoses and take the cooler out of the system completely for winter (duct tape over the cooler wasn't even good enough).

ahh see i only ever run mine when i know im going on track which is mostly thru spring till early autumn, but i do agree with you, they say 82 degrees on mine, and whilst looking at the ecu it used to say 70 or mis 70s max like yourself..

rust

i can't help but notice that you guys have a major rust issues on your cars.. :/ :(

also Blak_Mamber, i took out that entire chunk on mine because when i ground it sideways only, it was such a tight fit that it was grazing the sandwich so i took the leap of faith and chucked the entire mid-section. the bracket has held up well since..

haha.. don't worry about it Blak_Mamber. it's not as difficult as it seems, but there is some order to it. here's a very rough/sketchy guide to it;
_first would be to undo the lock bolt on the tensioner with a 12mm open ring spanner
_the undo the tensioner itself using a 12mm long-throw socket. easiest from underneath the car (remove your splash guard for this)
_remove or push aside the belt for ease of access
_remove the ps pump & place it aside (attached by 2 bolts)
_remove the bracket (iirc, it's also secured by 2 long bolts)
_do your magic with the sandwich plate and re-fit in reverse

i forgot to ask; do you still have air-con installed..? it will be a bit of a tight squeeze if you still have the stock intake pipe and air-con in place.. but still possible

Got round to fitting the new mocal sandwich plate, change the oil and filter too.

I took the power steering bracket off and took a chunk out of that with a angle grinder i hired this morning. Put some hammerite on the metal that was cut to save it rusting. Plenty of room now for the sandwich plate to sit without having to grind any off the side of it.

For some reason im still getting the odd drip of oil somewhere. i need to take a closer look again once its been jacked up. Also for some reason my oil pressure gauge dosent read straight away, it takes a while for it to start giving a reading. Its stuck on '0' for a while then suddenly just kicks in. strange.

Pic below you can see at the top the gap between the sandwich plate and the bracket. Not the smoothest of cuts but its all good :p

oil 'sammich' plate

your leak, sounds to me like the belt-side crank seal -- i have the same so i get lots of 'oil wetness' around that section yet you can't see where it's really coming from. best bet is to remove the cam belt cover (which can be tedious since you need the pulley off) then take a look behind the scenes..

as for your oil pressure gauge not giving readings straight away, that's pretty normal. think of it this way; when you have a long pipe plugged in to a tap, even though you turn the pressure up or shut the tap off, the response on the other end of the pipe is never instant right..? same thing here, the oil pressure emanating from the flow difference at the pump all the way through the galleries to the sensor takes a few moments -- nothing to worry about at all.

i'd say, watch if for a couple more days then report back if you are still having massive problems with it.. :)
happy motoring..
