your hb cables are probably worn and moist gets into them cousing it to freeze. replace them with new ones and dont wash the car and put it on hb when its cold. We have -20 - 30 here but I never expirienced this problem... My friend does have the same thing as you but his cables are worn...

Either Take the handbrake cable off, keep in doors on the radiator to dry it out and then pump it full of grease or buy new cables. It is a shitty design flaw with a lot of Toyotas from this period. Theres not really anything you can do about it. If it happens to your car, all you can do is replace the cables and hope it wont happen again

For the love of all things that taste of toffee, don't spray the brakes with WD40! Yes, it is a water dispersal agent (Hence its name), but it is also a very good lubricant.

Lubricant + brakes != good idea!

If you have washed the car recently, or if there has been heavy fog/rain and it freezes, you will probably find the wheels frozen, even if you don't put the handbrake on. Brakes sticking tend to be because the pad has frozen to the disk. Uma doesn't suffer from this problem because she has teh drumz of powah!!111!

I've been having this problem for the last few days too - its just my rear right brake though...

Ages ago, shortly after I got my starlet, i had problems with all 4 brakes getting excessively hot (but the back right was the worst) until it wouldnt physically move and i had to wait 20 minutes for them to cool down until I could drive it again..... also warped my discs to fcuk

then I got told by a mechanic that the handbrake ratchet in the rear-right caliper had seized, so replaced it with a 2nd hand one I bought off someone on here, and until now I've had no problems

This morning, i left my house and then like 2 mins later my rear-right wheel just started skidding down the road past all the mums walkin their kids to school, I must have looked like a right twat lol!!!

Anybody got any ideas? I don't like driving my car like this - can't help thinkin that if i take a corner and the brake decides to lock on then im gonna spin out into a 3 tonne 4x4 coming the other way!
Check the condition of the return spring on the top of the caliper. You may find it has worn or broken., meaning the caliper will stay on when the handbrake is released if it is a bit stiff. You can get new spinrgs from Toyota for a couple of quid each.

this happened this morning to me and when leaving from kellys tonight, rear brakes stuck on and handbrake was down, anyway, some de icer later. seemed to ease it off and normal service resumed as such, car parked in gear with handbrake off.
