problem with 5th gear help!

i fitted some TC brass linkage bushs to the gear box end to replace the rubber bushes a few weeks ago its all been fine then last week end i was driving it down the motorway and every time i let off or im going over 3000rpm it jumps out of gear, which i thought was strange so i put the rubber bushs back in and it still does it.
Ive checked all the linkages and there fine and it goes in to 5th but does not hold.

any ideas what to look for next or anyone had the same problem?

help!

are you using a trd short shifter with the standard gaitor?

it sounds like your 5th gear just isnt holding in. not too hot on gearboxes myself but itll need to come apart unless you can find something thats amiss. has something been put back wrong? under too much tension or something?

my 5th gear moves the gearstick backwards and forwards as i accelerate then let off. i can hear the inside of the box clunking around as something has some excessive play somewhere along the line.

if its not something simple then its a box apart job im afraid mate.

I've heard this to be a common issue with the C52 box, but never experienced it myself (so it's obviously that common), a worn 5th gear selector fork rings bells. I'm sure you can replace it without removing the box, it accessed by removing the 5th gear housing on the end of the box.

dont think there is enough room to remove the cover and get in there with it all in place. may be able to get to it with the gearbox side and rear mount removed so it can be dropped down? may as well remove the box though if going that far.

could be excessive end float if everything. ive heard that these gearboxs suffer quite a bit from this as the gears are pressed on.

The problem is easy guys.
I vehad the same on mine. I know. The gearstik is movin in 5th backwards under acc, forwatds under deacc. Funny heh... Then once it ll drop out once a week... than more often.

The trouble starter is your 5th syncro. Not a big deal. Original costs about 60 euros. (whole fifth gear. It takes an hour to change.

I ve got the problem on my firs and second 2e engine (the same gearbox as 4e... as i know).

uff

the syncros wont cause a gear to come out of place.. the selectors however would..

also since its only 5th gear i think by installing those bushings u may have bent//streched the linkages.. its very rare that a 5th gear wheel goes & u dont hear anything or dont have problems with other gears...

"As U feel it..."
I said I ve had got TWO 2E engines with the same problem; dropped out the fifth, than we replaced the 5tf gear and the syncron ring and the sincron hub (its all in one kit), then both tranys were fine. Both tranis were on high mileage.

Sorry to sound so abrubt but your selectors do simply that...select they dont hold the gear or anything like that, the Syncros do what they say on the tin the synchrnise the two gears speeds so they dont crunch when engaged.....the problem is and believe me here I have seen lots....the teeth on the fifth gear wear at a strange angle, therfore every time power is applied the pusg them selves apart, holding fifth in using gear lever works for a while bit you will fook your selector fork after a while.....remidy new fifth gear assy complete 1.5 hrs to replace and some gasket sealer......

my white one used to have this exact same clonk, it would jump out of reverse aswell, not 5th though.

might be woth just getting the gearbox refreshed, specially now you have upped the power by so much

Didnt want to start a new thread...im having the exact same problems (bar the knocking). Can anybody confirm that the 5th gear assembly?

Thanks :)

Last time I experienced this I found the rear engine mount was goosed.

The box rocking forward and back made the car drop out of fifth as the power was let off and the gearbox moved.

Worth a visual inspection before hauling the gearbag to bits.

Thanks mate i'll have a look.

I was driving down the motorway cruising, let off the throttle and it just popped out...did it a couple more times then did it on acceleration in 5th too...ended up holding it in gear the rest of the way! Only in 5th gear though :shoot:

yeah, noticed it on light throttle myself and only in 5th. Turns out the rear engine mount bush was completely broken from it's housing.
