Iv run a Golf GT TDi for the past 10 months as my daily driver and its been ideal. Reasonable performance for a diesel, plenty of mid range punch which is handy for overtaking, dont handle all that bad, very well refined, V.W Quality & spec (heated seats etc) and MPG. I get mid/high 50's driving normally, mid 40's if i drive it particually hard or if im trying on a run iv had mid 70's.

Your budget should allow you to get a nice PD model either 115 or 130bhp models are the better and also means youll have the 6 Speed gearbox which is far far better than the older 5 speed box.

If you have any other questions about them just give me a shout. :)

Hate to disagree but I'm at the end of a loooong-ass day in VW Warranty and would advise against the mk4 Golf. I could write a list of characteristic faults to put you off them or a host of other models in the range. ;)

Then again, my view of vee-dubs is a little 'tinted'..

its like that with anything jay. if you work with them you know all the faults and tend to be a bit jaded by it all.

if you saw some of the things i see at work you may be put off from buying a mars bar or malteasers again :p

I'd agree with you there Jay, I've seen a few engine and gearbox issues with both diesel and turbo petrol models.

Personally, I would look for a well looked after Mk3 Golf TDi (don't even think about the 1.9TD, they are painfully slow) or Audi A4. Be careful with Mk3 Golf's though, as some can suffer their fair share of rott, scrapped the last one I had due to the RHR wheel arch and seal falling out. Also be aware of Audi A4 front suspension, bottom arms have a tendancy to snap at the ball joint and both top arms can be a complete bastard to change when the ball joints wear due to the extremely crap design. The locking bolt that secures both top ball joints usually needs cutting in half to remove, its advised to remove these bolts at least once a year to clean and grease them up. Apart from that the A4 is good reliable car.

Get something that's been converted to LPG. Go on to Autotrader, adjust the options and have a look... Diesel's too bloody expensive at the moment.

My mate's just spent £3.8k on an limited edition LPG 150bhp 1.8 turbo (petrol) Skoda Octavia estate, with leather, sat-nav, xenons, cruise control, 7-speaker stereo with sub, FSH etc etc etc... Can't get a more reliable, practical, comfortable car in my opinion...

I have a 4.0l LPG Grand Cherokee and get 180 - 200 miles for £22 of gas.
If the stories are true about the expected price rise in gas it will be upto 70% more expensive than it is now. I will then be really screwed.

Is this the one with 2 doors on the passanger side and 1 on the drivers side? They are stupid looking things.
Are they not 2.0l's? dont think that would be that good on fuel.

I may be moving away from Dorset at the end of the year and I am trying to think of some cars that would be good, comfortable and reliable for doing a lot of miles…

Does not have to be Jap, if anything I think I would prefer it not to be Jap as I might feel the need to mod it lol

I would like something a bit newer than the GT not that would be hard. I do really like golf and Audis but I think they might be a bit out of my price range…

I think at a max I would have about 4k to spend

Thanks E :)

hey hav u luked into the toyota aygo yet 900 cc, with vvti technology, iv seen some 06 plate aygos on autotrader 4 around £4000. my mates got 1, they cheap n realiable, abit small but they gud value 4 money in my opinion. the 900 cc engine pulls 2. very gud on fuel cheap on road tax and quite comfi to.

toyota avensis all day long - just watch out for the 1.8 petrol models as some of the engines had issues with sludge build up and were replaced by oyota under warranty if I recall correctly. Id get the 2ltr diesel myself. The new one is among one the most fuel efficient cars Ive ever had.

I would reccomend a Skoda Fabia VRS. (DONT LAUGH!!)....... if you can stretch your budget.
Brilliant car, powerful and excellant MPG.
I bought one new, only sold last year coz of lack of use.
Remap it tp 185BHP and 295lb torque easy, and still get 50MPG.
