Stupid new forum!!!! GRRRRR

It sounds to me like the security centre you are running is blocking access. I had a problem in work where I could find www.toyotagtturbo.com when I switched servers and port it worked fine due to the fact there was too much security on my works network.
I would try disabling your security centre, best place to do this is:

Go to Start
Then Run
Type in MSCONFIG and press ok

This will bring up The System Configuration Utility
Go to the Start-up tab and click DISABLE ALL
Go to the Services tab and put a tick in 'Hide all Microsoft Services'
Then manually uncheck EVERYTHING that is left
Press Apply and Ok
Then Restart your computer and try again.

I would also recomend using Mozilla Firefox 2 if you type it into google you should find a download for it.

Can all users that are having problems give the following details and I will have a think and see if its certain types of router or ISP blocking the connection so need to know :teach::

Your ISP
Your Router/Modem
Your Security Centre
Your Internet Browser
Your Operating System

Dylan -- when i just tried "www.toyotagtturbo.com" in a new tab it worked fine. i restarted my comp and tried it again and it wont work again. Which is basically what its done all the time.Everytime you have helped me and we have gone through what to do on comp next day when i have gone to use it again it doesnt work again.

(obviously at mo im using it through that ip address)

Kelly can you go to start/run and type cmd and at the command prompt type nslookup www.toyotagtturbo.com and press enter

Then paste the output here and that should give us a clue as to what is going on.

We will get there :)

Thanks,

D

worth noting that sky routers are pre-flashed so don't require any additional setting up if you hard-reset them, this includes WAN settings and WPA security :)

Hi Kelly

You shouldn't have to create the hosts file - there should be one there that you just add the address to at the bottom.

Double check you are editing the correct file - it's located at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. Also, if you are editing it with Notepad, make sure it is not adding .txt to the end - it should be called hosts without any extension.

It may be best to browse using Explorer to the above location so you can actually see the hosts file, right click it and click Open. Find Notepad and click OK. Then add the following to the bottom and Save.

Code:
74.55.13.198 www.toyotagtturbo.com

Apologies if you are already doing all the above.

hiya

i did edit that correct host file and added the ip and address for the site correctly, but it has saved as a seperate document and as a notepad txt file. amongst all the other hosts files and backup files etc.

Aha! There is your problem.

When you save it, you need change "Save as type:" to All Files (*.*) - this will allow you to save the hosts file without adding .txt to the end.

good advice Peen, similar to what I thought was happening to Kon in the thread sticky'd at the top of this forum

Kon - if the hosts file now contains the entry as per above Windows will not do a DNS lookup so something is wrong.

Check back in the etc folder and see if you have a hosts file and another hosts text file now... it may have saved as a hosts.txt file.

hopefully it will be sorted now.

PS: I raised a ticket with our host to make sure everything was okay on our side and they have confirmed that it is.

i have done this but it stil saves this a a notepad document. I change the save type to all files and when i pop back in the "etc" folder its there as a notepad/txt document again.

.

The way you worded it to Kon i thought you was just explaining thats what it looked like if he was tryin to find it .

When you change from "Save as type:" to All Files (*.*), does it still show hosts.txt in the File name: box? If so, you need to delete the .txt bit so it only shows "hosts" before clicking Save.
