valve stem seals, which way round

Interstingly there are lots of aftermarket valve stem seals available that are the same for both sides........................

yeah dave...this is true....and i think its how people get a little mixed up......

that's why i said specifically that my information was in relation to toyota genuine/oem items---and WeeJohn's haynes manual confirms this as well.............good stuff all around

ok...if any of u guys have ever replaced valve stem seals......u would realise upon removal that the brownish ones come from the intake side...........and the grayish ones come from the exhaust side

plus i checked this on more than one occasion at the toyota dealer

but do as u wish...all is well...lol

I changed some on another GT a few weeks ago and the brown ones came from the exhaust side.

I also used some digital calipers and the difference is very very marginal...

i have just got my haynes manual out and it states the 4e series engines are identified my the seal lip and not the body it says:

4e intake-grey and exhaust-black

anyone got any pics lol

dan

it may not be size difference it could be material i spose

with toyota...as usual...there are many possibilities.....turbodave stated the differences are pretty marginal........so, the material could also be different....i cant say, but its possible

in terms of marginal differences...it would be best to error on the side of caution.....as we all know they are marginal differences in the oem pistons and oem bearings based on an assigned number index

however, as i said earlier...some people have mixed them up without ill effect.......BUT i would not

i cant totally remember........but i think the seals in the red tagged bag are rhe reddish/brownish ones----which go on the intake side--------please remeber, i am going on memory here:)

but have u seen the pics in the link? or u dont have access??

i will take some pics for u later and post up.....just that i have to attend a function.........so it will be very late tonight when i post them.........and i think the UK is 6 hours ahead of our time.........so u may well see them in the morning:)

we made this mistake the first time we did it....lol.....nothing really happened except what i described earlier---after a few heat cycles everything was ok......BUT we never made that mistake again with the other engines.....lol

lol and is that engine still going ok? :p

yes...very much so.....that's why its so funny......that engine has about 7-8 years on it now....:).....and still going strong
in this case the marginal difference appear to be insignificant....HOWEVER, one might not be so lucky with main/rod bearings...LOLOL

i still recommend that persons do it the right way...for piece of mind
