having your own place isnt as expensive as you may think mate. other than my mortgage payment the rest of the bills come to next to nothing really.

Aye, but tbh I think I just need to bite the bullet and do it! See how it goes...can always fall back into sponging off the rents and hopefully lease my place out. Will see what 2009 brings :)

Think about it this way.....you save and save from the age of 17 to buy the car youve always dreamed of, you turn 25 and fnally have enough money to get it, next minute you get hit by a bus and die. What a fun life you had. That is the way i look at it. loans got me what i wanted when i wanted it and i dont regret it one bit. Lifes to short! :)

ah now... I subscribe to this way of thinking. There is plenty of time to pay off loans and to increase your salary to match the standard of living you aspire to. If I want something now I have to have it. That doesnt always involve borring though but I look at it like this

-If I owe money and I die let them come to hell or whever I end up and hit me up for it

-If I wanted something and never got it cause I was either too afraid to spend the money or too careful in general I would be sorely upset when lying on my death bed.

People worry too much, even if you are up to your neck in it what is the worst that can happen :) They take you to court and you agree a regular payment you can afford big deal.

Owe the bank a thousand quid and dont make payments you will be taken to court... owe the bank 10 million quid and dont make payments and they will take you to dinner.

I am speaking from the point of view of someone who had massive debts on credit cards from living a social life I couldnt afford... about 20 grand. It seemed tough at the time but its all cleared now and with work I run up big credit card bills and because they are so high the bank pays me money every month :)

Do you want to be the lad in the ferrari or the lad dreaming about being the lad in the ferrari - Ill ponder that on my yacht some day ;)

Oh and for those stuck in debt... it takes time but you can get out of it and dare to dream!

Apart from the mortgage I have a couple of loans and 1 credit card. But atm im just playing the 0% offer game n bringing the debt down slowley on the card. One main load finished next year so that will leave me some extra cash, got about 4 years left on the load i had for my gt which, i had for 9 months before someone wrote it off :(

Plus i got the student loan of about 8k but ive not payed anything towards that and left uni/college about 4 years ago.

I was pretty stupid tho when I was younger, even tho I use to get paid £500 a month just to go to college I still ended up in debt, suppose thats what happens when you buy a car every year. 14-15 cars in 6 years of driving.

I think unless your well off its really hard not to get into debt these days.

I agree, it would be very tough not to be in debt. Self control, good fortune / hard work getting a very well paid job, inheriting a house or rich parents. I've got a decent job but none of the rest. Including mortgage I'm about 160-170k.

A mate of mine run up debts of about £20k when he was younder whereas I never had any debts. I didn't miss out on anything and also went to uni close to home therefore travelling there each day and not running up any debts. I regret not doing the full uni thing but am also pleased I left with no debts.

Car wise, I've had at least one or two each years - swapping isn't a cheap process so I would recommend changing every three years or so.

I've got a nice house to show for it and have been dreaming of owning and evo or something demon for about 15k since I left school.

I'll get there in the end but not without some debt.

I'm also with the theory, what If I got hit by a bus tomorrow - I've seen family members die of all ages around me, once you've had that experience, it changes your approach to life.

Grab it by the danglies!

What a depressing thread :(

Unfortunatly i have some which i need get rid of, but as mentioned earlier im glad im in this situation now and no doubt when im older (and wiser) i doubt i'll ever get myself here again. Its just been a bad year and with credit cards and overdrafts so easily obtained its hard to not touch especially when stuff pops up which puts u in a bad situation.

Im just more concerned that when i come off my fixed rate mortgage next year that i can afford whataver mortgage i can get again otherwise will be selling up and renting again.

thats what worries me, coming off the fix term too next year and also looking to move house, isnt going to be cheap. The thought has crossed my mind to rent too but hten I think its just dead money, im sure you guys will be ok, if not we can all house share haha

I have some debts but they're loans off family, really need to get those sorted!!

Otherthan that I don't have any credit cards etc so only spend what I have in the bank. Not even thinking about houses yet as I just can't afford it!!! even though I would really like to move out :(
