5E Coil on Plug post 1995?

According to wikipedia:
The 5E is a 1.5 L (1,497 cc) DOHC version. Output ranged from 93 hp (69 kW) at 5,400 rpm to 110 bhp (82 kW) at 6,400 rpm with 91 lb·ft (123 N·m) of torque at 3,200 rpm to 100 lb·ft (140 N·m) of torque at 4,000 rpm. It was introduced in 1990 and discontinued in 1998. All 5E engines were fuel-injected. In 1995 Toyota changed the ignition system to a distributor-less, coil-over-plug setup (DIS), switched from OBD to OBDII and began using flat topped pistons.

Is this correct because surely this setup on a standalone ECU like a Link G3/G4 would work really well especially since distributors aren't great at high revs?

Also it got me wondering if it's possible to have OBD2 on a standalone ECU? I've got a bluetooth obd2 sensor which connects to an app on my Android phone called Torque Pro and displays loads of dials showing anything like boost, engine temp, speed, mpg, etc. Id love this in my starlet... is this possible?

Pretty sure that's info relating to the US market. OBD2 was mandatory there from 95/96. I know my UKDM 1996 Paseo doesn't run it (just the basic OBD1 port like the JDM models) but I'd need a little time at the parts computer to check it out fully.

in america in the highly controlled anti pollution states (california is one of them) they done a version of the 5e with semi direct ignition. semi direct meaning, 2 of the spark plugs had the coils sitting directly on them, and then had 1 lead each coming from them onto the other 2 spark plugs.

they also had different crank pulley with trigger wheel, and a different oil pump with a bracket built on for the crank sensor.

only thing i'm not sure of is if they had a camshaft sensor

is that not wasted spark ignition?

no.

they fire seperately, it is wasted spark but the coils fire at seperate times. its basicly the same setup thats on a lot of mg rovers

ford coil packs for example are wasted spark ignition, the coil is 1 block and they all fire at the same time

no, it is wasted spark???? it either is or it isnt!?

the rover/mgs are the same as the fords. they just mount them differently and separate the coil block into 2 instead of having it as a single unit.

After 95 all of North America has the DIS setup with the two coils on the 5e-fe. The cams on a 4efte are bigger and not compatible with the DIS head, so when people want to build a turbo engine they usually just use the whole 4efte head on a 5e block.

ok yeah it is wasted spark.

the correct term for ignition on the 5e is semi direct ignition, its called semi direct because 1 of the coils sits directly on top of the spark plug.
