im using a speedvison metal head gasket in my newly forged engine..the head and block were skimmed and i used new head bolts..i have driven over 700kms so far and on a bit of acceleration the coolant overflows!now in fairness the rad and fan im using is the wepr rad and fan and to be honest its pants!
so i'l be replacing this first to see if it helps and also heatwrap the decat as it sits very close to the rad!

has many people changed the intake manifold gasket to a speedvision one?as wee john was talkin about?the reason i ask is that the toyota one is metal and the one speedvision ones gives in the set is a,well kinda like paper, lol

dave-i also use dish pistons....

aidan- to be honest mate i know everyone who used the wepr rad had coolant overflow problems..was in a post in the past...down to the civic single core rads that are used also causes overheating and push coolant out.
if ur coolant is being pushed out i would suppose u already overheated the engine?.....

sam i havent stuck the gasket i got from u in as yet mate if i have issues with it i will not post on a public forum mate i will come straight to u.....i dont like to accuse someone of something they have not have caused

A lot of people get water pushed out of their cooling system and immediately blame the head gasket. A sniffer test will show CO in the coolant. But at the intake manifold, there is an open waterway on the head beside the intake ports. This is sealed off by the intake manifold gasket. In theory, boost pressure could leak across the INTAKE GASKET into the cooling system at this point, if the seal is not good. This air in the coolant system would not have been burnt, so no CO would be present, rendering a sniffer test useless.

We have all got bogged down with headgaskets lately, maybe is this another area we should be looking at???

a theory i also thought about in this thread

right chaps and chappettes.

we've been doing some research into this tonight and we may have come up with a possible answer:

circled below is an outlet from the water jacket on the cylinder head, presumably for a water heated inlet mani.

now our starlets don't have a water heating inlet so it is blanked off

now, if the gasket was worn or damaged it would be entirely possible for boost to get past it and into the water system, pressurising it and causing the problems you are experiencing. a sniffer test wouldn't show this up as it is just pure compressed air at this point.

also, while we were doing this we noticed that the genuine gasket toyota supplied us was wrong. had we fitted it we would have pissed water all down the back of the engine

gasket that originally came with the engine, laid over the new one

note in both pics you can see light through the hole, confirming this hole is part of the cooling system as we were directing the light into the water jacket.

same as whats happened to ours. only does it under boost and would eventually empty the colling system if u didnt keep it topped up. we can clearly see on two headgaskets where its been blowing between the cylinders. still awaiting pics of mossy's if he can post it up.

as to bad tune etc, well everyones gonna have some det while in the mapping proccess its only normal. pistons looked absolutely perfect tho. no signs of det or scores etc. so i really dont think det was any problem for the gasket it was just poor design of gasket or quality of material.

No, not necessarily, because if he's keeping the system topped up like we had to we never saw temps over 90 degrees EVER on my cooling system.

and Sam.... wats your opinions, comments on the pictures?

The headgasket failing like that was not down to det, as ben has said the pistons show no sign of det at all, they look spot on.

As for this inlet manifold thing, well now ive done testing on my car, i had huge problems with the speedvision headgasket blowing coolant out, then i changed just that headgasket to a cruise one and i loose no coolant what so ever! lets stop trying to go round the fact, atleast the 2 headgaskets me and ben got were bad headgaskets, theres no other words for them, neither of them would have run no where near 2bar as they were rated for.

When i replaced mine nothing else changed, used the same inlet manifold gasket and just changed the headgasket i honestly say i have not lost one drop of coolant, the level stays perfect in the overflow bottle so thumbs up for the cruise headgasket from me :)

no sam its never over heated atal just overflows a bit..i'll be changing the rad and fan first and see how i get on:)

Rad and fan aint your problem mate, i first thought this but after doing back to back tests a different rad from stock civic one to a triple core civic one never made a difference, changing from speedvision headgasket to cruise headgasket stopped the problem completely!

bugger:(so now i have to decide wether to buy a triple core rad and a new fan or a headgasket:(

Certainly is a mystery. Seems it could be a combination of things rather then just one specifically.

I would understand the speculation if ALL the HG that have failed where done at same place or something similair etc

But theyve all been done by different ppl in different places. Different set ups too.

Now people are trying to blame the tune.........yet our car was tuned at the same place where Gee's was and Gee is one of the ppl who hasnt had any probs with his HG.

guys i explained why it does this on the last thread that was going but u all shrugged it off except turbodave i think it was,

basically with the wepr rads that are used, the standard rad cap DOESNT cover the overflow exit, so when under load the extra pressure is being forced out into the overflow bottle.

i guarantee you if you have no fluid in the overflow bottle it wont happen.

if you take a look at your rad cap youll see the spring isnt long enough to cover the overflow hole.

turbodave ( i think it was him ) somehow adapted the cap and made it long enough to cover the hole and never had that problem again. im 99% sure that is wat everyone is having problems with.

and no the engine doesnt overheat its just due to the pressure escaping!

i unfortunately never got the chance to actually fix it as i had a prang in it a few weeks later but im pretty sure this is the cause. what do yo think
