Looked at mine there, 3 earths straight from battery, 2 to chassis close by and 1 too gearbox, then 1 from gearbox to chassis :)
Check the plug on the pump for power with a wee fuse tester or multimetre

Right so I checked the voltage on the fuel pump and it was 4.67 volts or whatever. Thought I'd check the cable connection point to the back of the inlet manifold, sanded the top of the L ring terminal and bottom again as well as the manifold for the second time... fired up straight away. Great news right?

Well, here's the bad news.. when I fired it up I heard a loud grinding noise. Turned the engine off after a few seconds and inspected the bay, only to find smoke coming out the rubber that sits on the gearbox next to the slave cylinder.

I fired it up again briefly to test the gears and it wouldn't go into any even though I bled the clutch. Turned it off checked the linkage (fine) seems to go into gear with the engine off but not on.

So you can imagine how pissed off I am considering I've spent nearly £800 on a new 4efte clutch and flywheel and now it's not functioning properly grrrr.

I put on the flywheel with new bolts (loctited) and cleaned it with brake cleaner, same with the clutch. It had a new thrust bearing fitted properly, spline and centre clutch greased. I used an alignment tool when guiding the pressure plate on. I just don't know where I went wrong.

Noise and smoke means something is hitting something. I've had horrendous trouble with aftermarket clutches and flywheels in the past (namely Competition clutches). That box will probably have to come off again so as you can examine what is hitting what. Fingers crossed it's just the sandwich plate catching the flywheel.

Had a nightmare of a Glanza clutch and flywheel replacement years back where the release bearing was supplied wrong, the clutch plate was supplied wrong, and the super-duper lightweight flywheel was machined wrong all leading to the box being in and out three bloody times. Hopefully yours is a bit more straightforward!

Yeah I bought a competition lightweight flywheel and an exedy organic s1 clutch kit I'm not intending to go wild on the power in the future.

So if it was to be the dust cover, could that also prevent it from going into gear whilst running?
Could the starter motor be stuck as well? Just throwing out ideas.

If I finish early today I'll jack it up and try inspect the noise and make a video.

Is the clutch plate in the right way?

As for the earth cables, they are like shoe strings on starlets. Best option is to replace them all to future proof against various electrical faults, non starts etc.

The flatter side of the central disc (where the 4 springs are) is up against the flywheel, and the other side that sticks out more centrally is sat in the pressure plate. I don't think it would go on the other way because the flywheel bolts are in the way.

If it will only go into gear with the engine off then that is clutch clearance related.

Easiest is to bleed the clutch fluid again.

Also seen clutch forks pop off.

If you can spin the engine by hand does it make a noise?
