Got my first ever speeding letter!

tell them you need to see a photo of you speeding and also ask for a copy of the calibration certificate of the gun or camera(which ever they were using) if they cannot provide you with a copy of that certificate they havent a leg to stand on.:)

Would that be the same for us Irish as I got done and didn't ask the cop for a thing????what can I ask for a photo and??????????

did you ask for calibration cerificates, there was a case not so long back when a man went to court and they pointed a speed gun at the wall and it read 7mph, which at a distance can work out as much as 16mph over what you are actually doing at the time.if the gun was not calibrated that day then they havent got a leg to stand on

You are not entitled to any evidence (i.e calibration certificates etc ) unless you plead not guilty and go to court but if that happens and you are then found guilty then the punishment can be more severe.
Although you can plead that everyone should be treated equally human rights bla bla and refer to previous cases where people have just recieved the normal 3points and fine. However luck is rarely on my side so i can see my coming out worst off :p

Guns are self-calibrating now, so the gun can detect if its calibration has moved from the pre-set parameters, and if it has, it shuts itself down so it can't be used.

The old ruse of 'I don't know who was driving' doesn't work anymore, They'll just take you to court as the registered owner of the vehicle unless you can prove otherwise.

And yes, as you've gone over 40mph, you'll get an endorsement instead of the speed awareness course. Unfortunately, as you've broken the law, you'll have to pay the fine. Just like I'm doing at the moment... :(

If that says 41mph, then what speed is the van doing, clearly hes speeding also.

yeh the van got one too as it was Ben driving i was following him eeek! two for one household.

malcolm yeh i swirled the plates unfortunately they are very clear on the pics. The first picture alone would qulaify for contesting from the ping off the glass it has to be aimed at flat surface of a car (even a bonnet etc can give false reading) but the second picture seems spot on aim wise etc.

Mark yeh i dont plan to contest just miffed that asked for a pic to identify the driver and thats what they send.
You only so called qualify for speed awareness course on your speed. It has to be - Speed limit + 10% + 6mph. in a 30zone thats 39mph and below.

Just annoyed that they dont come and sit in residential estates like ours where its a 20zone and speed bumps yet cars come flying down doing about 40mph plus. Instead they'll sit on the road where the speed limit changes.

Indeed, if you say you don't know who was driving the car you'll be summonsed to court for 'Failing to provide information of the driver at the time of the alleged offence' and could be hit with a greater penalty than you would if you admit to being the driver.

Section 172 of the 1988 Road Traffic Act places a burden on the owner of a motor vehicle to give information as to the identity of the driver of the vehicle at the time of an alleged offence, such as speeding.

The offence of failing to nominate a driver at the time of an alleged offence used to carry a maximum of three-penalty points and a £1000 fine.

However, in response to the increased number of motorists using this penalty as an effective method of capping liability, the government has introduced new legislation to increase the number of penalty points to six for the same offence. This legislation came into force on 1 October 2007.

The law states that you are required to identify the driver of a vehicle when it the driver is alleged to have committed an offence.
