Having Gear Problems

I hope I've put this in the right place? This problem is in a 1997 Glanza V.

On Friday evening, I was coming up to a roundabout in 4th gear and was slowing down, as I went to change to 3rd, it wouldn't go in....and in fact, would not select any gear at all. I pulled over and sat trying to select any gear but the car just wouldn't do it. The car would select any gear when the car is switched off but, none when it's on.

In order to get the car home, I managed to get it into gear while the car was off and then turn it on, and it drove fine....selecting all gears when needed. Yesterday morning, I took it to a mechanic about 10 miles away from where I live...the car drove fine from the moment I turned it on and selected first gear, all the way there and back again. The mechanic said I'm on my way for a new clutch but I just wanted to post this on here and see what you all think....

Driving the car again last night....did everything it was supposed to perfectly and then, I had parked and was trying to move it to take it back home again...started the car and couldn't get any gears, turned it off and still couldn't get any gears...finally managed to get reverse while the car was turned on but as I selected reverse, the car stalled. This happened a few times until I finally managed to get it moved and home and it's sat in the yard since.

Has anyone else had this problem or know if it sounds more like a clutch issue or gearbox issue? I just can't understand why the car is only doing this sometimes and running fine the rest of the time? :S

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Your mechanic sounds spot on in my opinion, not being able to select any gear when its running id assume your clutch has very little life in it. Under boost or acceleration does the clutch slip and revs climb very quickly?

When my cars switched off i can select any gear without using the clutch but when its on i cannot, i wouldnt even try without pressing the clutch or risk damaging the box.

If your driving aswell your clutch and components will warm up, therefore its more likely to slip and give you the troubles your experiencing.

Yeah, would agree the clutch sounds like the main suspect.

If it were a clutch cylinder issue it wouldn't just clear up like that. Get the gearbox removed and clutch inspected. Would do no harm to have a fresh clutch ready to fit whilst you have the box off.
