you should always get your block and head checked for cracks even if your just replacing the head gasket for peace of mind

All I'm saying is, is that I would feel bad, if you just changed the gasket, and in a months time it went again due to the block being out.

If you take the block to be decked, you have to strip all the crank and barings out, and if they come out, good workmanship ensures that they be replaced.

What are the Toyota head gaskets like for these engines? Are they MLS ones or the old fibre type?

yea in an ideal word you would strip apart the block if your gasket goes a month later..but how many people are going to stip apart an engine everytime there head gasket goes, mine over heated a fair few times when my gaket went, skimmed the head, put a metal head gasket on her, back up to 1.4bar no trouble what so ever...
