Something i thought would never happen but it has and to be honest i'm glad!

A guy on a local forum has made me realise how much money ive been wasting on modding/tuning... yes ive enjoyed it but while ive been modding he's been saving and buyin more expensive cars with ever swap...

He's made me realise if i didnt do the tuning thing i should be running around in a car worth around 15k by now!!! He is a bit older than me, he's 24 but he's running around in this:

n747292213_683351_5658.jpg

2003 TVR T350 (3.5ltr 350bhp 6 Cyclinder)

and his previous cars have included a Vauxhall VX220 Turbo, Courtenay Tuned to 250bhp and a Ford Focus RS Turbo.

now that ive realised this - ive got some catchin up to do :p

Eh,

The TVR will probably cost about 5 times the amount to run, expect big repair bills every month, and higher running costs in general. It'll also devalue VERY quickly if you was to run it daily.

As for his previous, the VX220 was modified. And the focus RS would no doubt be slower than you have now.

i think the point is being missed a bit here...

The point is if i didnt loose so much money on cars by modifyin/tuning them etc... i would be driving around in a 15k car instead of a 5k car... Im not sayin because of the speed or posing factor or anything like that...

its all to do with money, just saying if i didnt do the modifying thing i could now have a 15k car to my name as opposed to a 5k car.. i could basically have 10k more to my name.

Yes i did enjoy it.. but was it worth it?? im not too sure tbh but time will tell...

and i will still do small mods just to make my car look that little bit unique to standard but nothing pricey... i do like cars but thinkin about them money ive lost in tuning them is a bit of a sickener.

Maybe this is just a phase i dont know i might be swayed back but at the minute i want my Exige :p

The fact is if your using girls to impress women then your pretty sad, be it an audi or a glanza.

You'll only get a lasting realationship if you have good looks, charm and are amazing in bed

Like me:p

ive been in a happy relationship for 2 years now and we are moving in together... she hated my glanza's.

I do see your point, i would be sitting in an Evo myself if i saved..

But to the point, i love starlets including modding them, its great fun.. for a second dont think its cheap, nothing is. Its all down to individuality.

Thumbs up mate if it works for you. I shall remain modding yoo.

yes i understand that but ive asked myself what would i rather be sitting in at 25, a tuned DC2 (my current car) or a Lotus Exige...

I chose the exige... so i have to give up modding..

i had loads of fun in my starlets tho but its time for me to move on i think :)

i havent read through these posts, but i'll give my opinion on the first post.

I get a buzz from tuning/moddiying, Its not necessarily the car im driving but watching the car grow from something no soo good to something a bit special. Its not the money with me its the enjoyment that modding brings to me.

Its all preference and where the "true passion lies" Not just having a nice decent car. Theres alot more to it.

Different strokes for different folks!

There are insurance companys out there that insure all sorts of cars and modifications mate. I had every mod declared and the power, which was close to 300hp.

Dont be fooled because of the quotes you have been getting recently, as you get older it drops a lot.

And the modding bug..well. We all love modding, even if it is just chassis things, like strut braces etc. Doesnt not always have to be power hungry modifications.

And as people have already said..it's all well and good buying a car..running it and insuring it is a different story.

Hell, I could of bought an Evo with the money I spent on the Honda, but I had to compromise between certain factors. Prices on replacement parts and running costs to name just a few.

I dont think you have lost the bug at all. Basically, everyone is feeling the pinch, we all feel like we should reduce our outgoings and people always tell us that modding is a waste of money.

Why? Its a hobby like anything else and I get to drive the car everyday. Not like going rock climbing once every two weeks.

You love cars in general and you love modding..you just don't love the money it takes at the moment and you have been swayed by other peoples opinions. And you will be swayed back again..trust me. You will keep going back and forth..changing you mind again and again..just like you probabaly did when it came to selling the Starlet.

Dont think about it too much, spend money responsibly, maybe cut back..but enjoy what you do and enjoy life without regrets.

Saying you have lost the modding bug is bollox...even people with Murcielago's throw twin turbo's on them! If our pockets were endless..we'd keep modding regardless of the cars we own!

Hi mate

Just want too share my view, i know your saying that if you didnt spend so much money on your current car, you could be sailing around in something else, but if you save that money up too go buy a more expensive car, its goin to depreciate quicker, harder too run, and too keep up there your going too have too keep changing every year or two, then you will have too put more money into buying the new car, the idea of saving the money for something better, becomes more expensive than buying a car and modding it and keeping it for longer, but it all depends on what range you want too be in whether its in the 4-8k mark or the 10-15k. but if its all about money, personally i would save it for something else than a car, just my veiw, and i understand yours.

I've always thought about getting a new more expensive "german" car etc but:

a) everyone has them round here (like keeping up with the jones)
b) cost way too much to run, service etc
c) big cars don't hold much fun for me

Don't get me wrong I like all sorts of cars but I think if youre happy with what youre running then that's cool. My bro just bought a Audi S3 estate for him and the missus, but he likes german cool and loads of gadgets.

As for glanza and ladies, that makes me laugh. I've never given a toss about watch the chicks think, my missus knows I like my wee cars and doesn't mind.

As long as youre happy with what your spending, if youre spending serious amounts of dough then try a more expensive car sure.

Best thing to get a chick, is charm, and a huge cock, any chicks looking for nice cars, money, are worthless, unless youre looking for a quick ride... :p

Modifying is about making your car your own and a bit different to everyone elses. I will go down whatever style I want. Personally don't care for all the JDM wheels and all that, so won't be going that way. And it's not all about power either for me. It's about learning about the car and making it realiable, although a bit more power will be nice for when you need to overtake!

But if you are looking for an elise, has to be an exige s, have driven one, although breifly, it was awesome. Was grinning like a mo fo when I got to drive it. Although as a daily driver, doubt it would make me smile with it's running costs and lack of sound deadening.

As long as you enjoy driving your car and like the look of it, nothing else matters.

I've spent like 8k on my gti, and will probably spend a fair bit on my starbo as well. Yes I could have a m3 (older style) or a more prestigious car, but for what I want, a starbo is fine, even at my age.

the starlet hands down.. i know mate but to be honest what insurance company is goin to insure you on a 300bhp starlet all mods declared??

im not sayin modding is a bad choice, its just been an eye opener for me thats all... a well modded car will beat virtually all out of factory cars but im just gettin to a poitn where i think nice quick cars are the way forward lol

i had a 294bhp gt, all mods declaired with sky insurance, inc forged pistons ect...everything.

for 1100 fully comp, like for like on mods, at 23, 2 years ncb and 3 points (sp30)

i recommend them for any modified car.

I agree with what your saying and some of my mates have gone down that route too but when people see a TVR go past they go ooohh theres a tvr, when you go past in a gt and let off with some chatter you get the WTF was that factor, thats what i love about GT's and Japanese cars in general its just the unexpected part of it.
