Im only 5"6 but i can lift quite a lot for my height. Cant manage 50kg though!

Iv just started again, the problem i have is that im trying to gain muscle and lose some belly fat aswell.

Any ideas guys?

I'm 5ft 6 mate and you say you lift 50kg but in what manor of lifting? I don't bench a lot as its not part of my routine but I do around the 120kg free ! leg squats around 500kg! but my bicep curls are really poo lol... if you see where I'm going every movement will lift different weights!

Do you really mean you squat 500kgs ie 12*20kg plates on an olympic bar? Because the world record is near 550kg iirc?

Dub - Awful strange you can do more free weights than on a smith machine its been the other way around for almost everyone I know including myself.

i can push a lot more weight on an olympic bar than i can on a smith machine. i often train alone so use the smith machine for safety reasons and i am maxing about 80kg on that, when i train with a friend and we use the free weights i can push around 120. i put it down to you can involve more muscle groups on the freeweight.

Yeah. So surely that means the Smith machine is better for working your chest as it restricts what muscles you can use and means you predominatly use just your chest?! lol :p

I shall try 60kg for my workout next week, see how I fair!

LOL @ 500KG!!! I need what your taking andrew :p

Im with DUBseven, i can lift more on the Free weights then i can manage on the smith, god knows as most people do the opposite, In fact it doesnt make much sense lol, ive just always been taught on frees, maybe thats why.

Not quite true as the smith machine does not allow you to train the stabilister muscles of the chest which you need for free benching :).

However you try to lift it the strength comes from your entire body and not just your chest.

Ive been weight training for 2.5 years and can lift pretty decent weight but everyone has to start somewhere! The bigger guys are also the people you can watch and learn from :).

My advice though is to do different body parts on different days my routine goes like this;

Monday - Chest,
3 sets flat bench press free weights and olympic bar, dont bother with smith machines.
3 sets incline dumbell press
3 sets incline flys
3 sets cable cross overs

Tuesday - back,
3 sets until failure wide grip pull ups, use the weight assist machine if you have to :)
3 sets deadlifts
3 sets t-bar rows
3 sets seated rows

Wednesday day off

Thursday - shoulders
3 sets seated Dumbell press
3 sets super setted weight drop down on a shoulder press machine
3 sets front raises
3 sets side raises
3 sets shrugs

Friday - arms
Mixture of tricep and bicep exercises!

It does take lots of time though, rest and diet are the most important!

Wow very similar to my routine Dave, i am not a vetran such as yourself though only been doing it 4 months but have no intention of stopping.

Yeah strange one that lads I can manage 110kgs flat bench free weights on an olympic bar, bar at 20kg, 4*20kg plates and 2*5kg plates but could do the same weight or even 120 ish on the smith machine easier.

Deadlifts are an excellent exercise and my favourites!

HaHa, for me its Cycle to work whenever its not raining - 3 miles downhill there, and about 3 miles uphill back.. then I try and run about 3 miles 3 days a week.. im abit chubby to and its FRICKING hard!

Wanna get to the gym soon and get buff but my decent local is around £72 a month!

No mate lol on a leg press machine sorry miss worded that makes me sound mighty impressive!

Also I find I can free bench more than I can on a smiths machine but thats down to other muscles being able to back your chest up.

definietly possible as ive happily pushed a good few reps of 250KG(which was the whole rack), so im confidant i could do 300KG and my legs arent exactly what youd call "big" lol :p

Did chest & shoulders today.

Trying different things now, but decided to use the Olympic bar and free bench - no more Smith machine! Did:

5x5 flat bench 60kg
5x5 incline bench 57.5kg
5x5 decline bench 57.5kg
5x5 incline fly 18kg

Then a bunch of shoulder exercises; Arnold press, front lifts, shrugs etc.

It was actually fairly easy?! Especially the 60kg flat, didn't need any help whatsoever. Gains = WIN!

update lol

ok people. i finally started at gym on 1st april lol and so been going around 6months or so now. regularly 4 odd times a week. and doing a road run here and there inbetween. not very often tho as it hurts my knees.

and im happy to report ive gone from 16st, 7lb...to 13st, 6lb.

but now i need help again lol. i regularly get people sayin im a skinny bastard etc and i gta admit i would like to be a bit bigger. just muscley bigger not just gain weight again. basically as they put it 'get ripped'. i think my diet plays a key role here as i eat big meals. whereas i think ur sposed to eat little and often.

i dnt wna look skinny. im happy ive lost the weight and got in much better shape, but now i wna put on some muscle and rly tone it up, but can i do this while also continuing my cardio stuff as i enjoy it and like keeping fit. i have lost a lot of excess fat but im not that strong as such and rly wna improve this. ppl have suggested these protein shake things. are they worth it? any1 been faced with this same problem? wheres best to find some info on this as the trainers at the gym want 20quid just for a consultation!!! any1 who got any good advice i got rep waiting here.

edit: any good upper body/abs/strength workouts if any1 knows any

i do alot in the gym my advice loads of small weights but more of them you see idots going in lifting mad weights 3-5 times and there fucked it does noting

less weights over a long period gives you good endurance muscle tone and strenght

youtube is your best bet for at home exercises

get a punch bag best exercise you could ever do :)

and also no point doing any of the above if you dont have a good diet plan pm me if you want some pointers mate:):)

yeah but if you do a few rep's with bigger weights it rips your musles so when they repair themselves they repair bigger!

i was told that too...i thought big weights and few reps rip ur arms better, and little weights and more reps make ur arms not bigger but more solid. (i want a bitta both).

wat up dude, any help wanted just mail me wenev, this has become huge over the past 3 or so years, especially when u see the likes of "extreme male beauty" on ch4 ect.

im a fitness instrutur & lifegaurd "basicly", iv bin on & off the weights now for the past four years, bt over the past 7ish month iv bin sticking to it due to fre time ect,

it all depend wat body type your & wat u want frm it, 2put it simply 4me i eat between 2/2hlf thousand calories a day = 6 high protein high carbohydrates meals. bt if ur over weight i wouldnt advise it cristiano ronaldo is 6ft2 and weights 12stone the man has a body like no othr:L, if ur over weight sweat, sweat as much as u can and dnt worry bout lifting. if ur in skinny bt have a bad diet u wont nesesarly get fat, food is mainly a health issue, and wont make u fat unless ur lazy..

lazy and bad diet = fat.

good diet and lazy =fat(as ur body will not burn the food suply good or bad)

active and bad diet = unhealthy, not fat as u are burning the food just means the nutrients ur burning will not be aiding ur muscle growth ect

get the picture, oh and i lift heavy weights for 6 to add muscle mass lifting light weight high reps will only tone ur muscle, my route is triceps/biceps.. chest/shoulders/.. back/legs.. and my fourth day is just body weight trainning pullups, pressups ect..
