Check Wikipedia if you don't believe me Kon, just read a small caption there - it's to do with the hardness/brittleness of the steels, the higher carbon content lending to a harder and more brittle steel than mild steel (which is more malleable or "soft"), making it, well, not more difficult to weld perse', but more susceptible to distortion

iv got a S/S one
hope mine doesnt crack
can see a weld on the top of it already
is it more likely to crack if its bin welded before?

I was just about to order one of daves manifold 195 + del but from what i keep hearing about stainless i might have to wait for speedvisions mild steel ones

Why are you all talking about moisture trapping from heatwrap being an issue on a stainless steel manifold that heats up to ~1100 deg C? :D

The argument against heat wrap is that it can trap too much heat which would transfer to the turbo and downpipe. The thickness and quality of the metal plays a part too. The metal can be too thick. Let me explain, using a pair of glasses as an example...

If you freeze and empty wine glass and an empty tumbler, then rapidly heat both by putting boiling water in them, which will crack sooner? The thin wine glass yeh? Wrong! The tumbler is more likely to crack because of the differences in temperatures at the inside and outside edge of the glass. As the inside heats rapidly, the outside takes a little bit longer to heat up, creating shear tension through the glass and cracking it. The thinner wine glass is less prone to cracking as the thinner glass is able to keep the inner and outer edges of the glass at closer temperatures.

Don't try it at home though! :p

I've got one of those. Been on 3-4 months so far with no issues :)

I just threw a random point (which I usually discredit for the same reason you mentioned :p) to throw everyone off :D

hey take a read........VERY informative......alll shall be received

Not hugely informative, most people couldn't agree on what was best.

I've asked my local (ish) exhaust fabricator before about a manifold and he can do one for £560. Sounds damned expensive but the quality of his work is second to none and it's an up and over type rather than the shitty design we have on offer now. Only trouble is he needs the car for a week and I haven't got that sort of money to throw about. :(

I need to see him about a downpipe soon anyway, so I'll ask him about the possibility of fabricating one and giving me a good discount if he makes a jig for it and sells them to club members for a good price. :)

I was wondering, is there any merit to just porting the third runner on the stock manifold to remove the restriction? Tbh, to me jam manifolds looks like the stock ones but without the restriction.

as long as he keeps the mounting in the same place so new oil and water lines arent needed then i may well be interested.

well turbo dave seems to be getting on quite well with a ported standard mani running 1.1 bar on a hybrid turbo.

Well maybe that's our saving grace then. Restriction gone, no cracking, cheap solution. What do you guys think?

Its the route im going to take, gotta be worth a try.
I agree it's worth a try. For the cost of doing it this way, I don't think anyone would be disappointed. It must be pretty cheap and easy to do I would imagine.

Not that much realy a bit though I grinded some of the part where it joins to the turbo too where it has the divider.

I took my digital thermometer the ones with a lazer pointer etc and the 3rd runner isnt much warmer than the rest of the manifold even after holding it on boost. The block where the exhaust gasses enter the manifold isnt much hotter if any than the other 3 cylinders either.

I do look after cooling though fmic with intercooler spray, radiator spray, airfilter in the bumper, lifted bonnet and still with the bonnet vent for extra cooling. Correct cooling is very important especially when running higher power.

yo newguye,,,and others......u all may not remember this (old yahoo site).....but a LONG time ago there was this guy from jamaica "victor/maxcarconversions" who used to run a ported manifold with a hybrid ct12 turbo .........ran consistent 12 second passes on the 1/4 mile using a mini frame with 4efte fitted, etc

anyway.....quite a few did not beleive it........but he backed it up with time slips, pics etc......in fact he was even willing to send his ported mani to be compared to a built mani ----flow tested,,,,,,but it never came off

from what i recall.........they actually kind of opened up the 3rd runner section by adding a little piece,,,,,,,,,,,so it can be done

I have got a jam mani waiting to go on. I think the jam mani and the blitz decat are about the strongest combination.
