MOT : Exhaust Noise

Hey guys, just had an MOT and it's failed on exhaust noise..

It's a scorpion straight exhaust and i'd rather not have a silencer fitted (not sure how much power i'd lose aswell).

Would it be worth getting the problems fixed at the current garage and moving to one a little more leniant on noise?

Personally i would just borrow i stock exhaust off someone or put a silencer on and get the m.o.t done same place instead of going somewhere else as they might just fail you again.

No that won't be the reason.

The OE downpipes were shaped to take a cat, but only CB70 (Japanese) and some European CB80's had them.

Your hunting may be due to air in the coolant (Check the thermostat is the correct way up with the nipple at the top). Also check for split or perished vacuum hoses. Log on to the Daihard forums, there is plenty of information to digest over there.

How is performance? It's not uncommon for a GTti to be running around with the cambelt one tooth out!

Ah it's not too bad, not bombing it as the bottom of the engine's been rebuilt. When i bought it he said it had a hybrid turbo though can't be sure as i still need to connect the boost guage.

Will check for any problems with the vac and thermostat in the morning, the guy i bought the car from said the idling was due to old fuel..

Looking at a down pipe aswell as i heard they work wonders! :D

The MOT was as follows however -

001 - Offside rear fog lamp not in good working order (not working) [1.1.6b] = Have fitted a fog lamp but still need to wire it.

002 - Exhaust has a part missing [7.1.2b] = I think he means a silencer however i will fit what you've shown me as it looks brilliant!

003 - Exhaust noise is clearly in excess of that emitted by a similar vehicle fitted with a standard silencer in average condition [7.1.2b] = Hopefully silencer will fix this..

004 - Nearside front anti-roll bar rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement [2.4.g.3] = Not sure how easy these are to replace =/ Needs bush's on both sides.

005 - Front Brakes imbalances [3.7.a.2e] = Was hoping that this wouldn't be such an expensive repair and that they can be fixed as i don't want to replace my drilled discs =P.

006 - (both) Rear brake recording little or no efford [3.7.A.4a] = My GTti has drum brakes on the rear, probably packed with asbestos..would i have to purchase a new set or will they be fixable as they're probably siezed.

I hope i can get this car on the road asap, the garage that gave the MOT today can only start looking at it on the 8th so i'd rather do a little myself and take it to a specialist before then to get the MOT sooner to give Dolb a spin before he gets his Starlet on the road.. =]
