my gt turbo doesnt seem to like me.

Hi folks im new to this site but have had a good few gt turbo/glanza's over the last 3 years,

i bought a 1995 gt turbo starlet last week with the engine knoching. Got it home and striped out the engine to discover that the cambelt pully had broke causing the oil pump to cut out and the belt jumped. The exhaust side of the turbo was also sitting inside in the turbo retired for good.

Put a new engine and new turbo into car a few days ago put in new plugs oil filters got it all going and timed it. car idles perfect but the second i give it full throttle in any gear it began missfiring and was very underpowered. If i was gentle on throttle i can drive it but still missed and jumped and struggled to go up hills or in 5th gear on flat road. This was with very little throttle at low levels of psi.
Put a new coilpack distribitor new plug leads and new ht lead on today and timed it again. The car is 100 times better and allows more throttle and more boost but still the second i give it full throttle it jumps to 11 psi winds down to 6 psi and goes back to 11 psi meanwhile the car is jumping and fighting to go and is very underpowered. since last nite when this happens it runs a fault code light. All the ignition system has been changed yet it still feels lik its missing and i highly doubt it is fuel cut as it happens from bout 8 psi on. any help would be greatly appreciated as i am fit to stick an axe through my block. there is a 2 port actuator with the high low bypassed. The second nipple is left exposed as when i blank it off car runs a very low level of boost.

sounds like it could be a few things to me, what sort of plugs are you running, Is your lambda working correctly, if all else fails i'm only over the road from you dude so you can give a shout some evening and i can have a look for you and see if i can spot anything.

Run a diagnostic check and tell us what fault code you are getting mate. Might shed a little light on things.

Ive tryed a few different plugs over the last few days had denso k20/k16 twin ground ngk irdium plugs the problem stays the same no matter wat i seem to do. Thanks frank i might just take you up on that going to have another look around it today and try to get the fault code checked by my local garage

Thanks steve that was a very helpful link. Changed distribitor cap again today and that sorted out my misfiring :)

Under full throttle the boost is going up and down and wont hold a constant level of boost. Then sometimes with full throttle boost jumps and car acts like a misfire and runs a fault code. Ran the code and its 34 excessive turbo charging pressure which would be fuel cut. All this leads me to believe my standard actuator spring is fucked as it cant hold boost drops and rises and then jumps to fuel cut. Im going to get another actuator today and see if that sloves my problem fingers crossed

yes the vac line from the map sensor is connected. Car is running perfect now bar the boost going up and down under throttle and hitting fuel cut. just trying to find an actuator for it

so i ended up finding another actuator in my garage and threw it on..same thing boosting mad going up and down and then hitting fuel cut. its a dual port actuator but only one port is connected to the turbo. when i blank off the exposed port its kills my boost to 2-3 psi not even enough to hear the dumpvalve. when i take the blank off boost goes crazy again?

its as if the wastegate is opening too fast and not allowing boost to build? i might just buy a manual boost controller tomorow and see if i can set my boost off that as i am running out of ideas and patience with my gt  i either have mad boost or very little but not standard/??

any pics of your engine bay? dont block off the second port on the actuator.. which port on the actuator have you connected to the turbo?

il put up pics in the morning of the engine and the actuator etc the turbo is connected to the 1st port which is the one u see when u look down at the manifold it was connected to the one on the back but it boosts the same either way

problem solved at last

So after a whole load of messing around and trying anything i could think of i finally got it going right. Turns out the problem was the exposed 2nd port on the actuator. With this exposed enough pressure couldnt be built up to open the wastegate causing overboost which was leading to the fuel cuts. As the actuator rod tryed to move foward to open the wastegate it was losing pressure through the port and was closing and opening the wastegate causing the boost to go up and down. This was caused when the previous owner tryed to bypass the hi/low mode by removing the piping from boost solonoid. I ran a vac line from the port to the solonoid and from the solonoid to the efi pipe which put it back to hi/lo turbo. boosting perfect after this. Then i looped the solonoid and ran the vac line the port straight into the efi pipe which bypassed the hi/lo again and its perfect full 10 psi boost in all gears winds up perfect and no jumping or fuel cut and driving perfect. And just in perfect time as i was seriously considering parking the gt in a tree. Thanks to everyone for all yer help and ideas it is very much apreciated :)
