petrol light problem

After a long drive i nearly ran out of petrol and was pretty much empty as i got to a garage but my petrol light had never once gone on until i had put fuel in and the light has not gone off since, and i've had the tank at half full, anyone got any ideas what the problem could be?

Thanks

Mine stays on for a long time after ive filled up, then it decides to go off when it feels like it :)

Even when im running out of fuel it goes on and off for some time before staying on constantly.

You'll probably notice it more now because it gets dark earlier now :)

yeah mine always used to be on but would go off when braking when i was low on fuel. but this light has been on as bright as it goes for about 3 weeks now and hasn't slightly dimmed once no matter how much petrol i have.

Is there anything i could check to fix it or is it a garage job?

Thank fook I'm not the only one experiencing this problem :(
Last night I got home from college and the light was on I went a put £10 in just to take the light off and it went off for about 2 minutes... I did a 30mile blast at a 1er and then went back and put another £5.50 thinking umm that might take the light off... still nothing but it was showing over 1/4 of a tank... me confused by this point as it's closer to half with the light on, knowing sometimes it just takes a while for the needle to catch up after a refuel I gave it the benefit of the doubt.

So I got up and drove college and back today (a fair way but not too far) Still the light is on... So I puts another £10 in tonight and the light still hasn't gone off.. So I've done about 45 miles on £25.50 worth of fuel... and the light has not gone off and the maths don't add up to me...

Nothing I do will make this light go off, and I'm a poor jobless student and can't have anymore money off my parents to fill the tank right up. :( I will try and take a look for this cap you mention tomorrow. Any other suggestions would be grately appreciated and do let us know how you got on with yours :)

I'm still having the same problem. took the seat off unplugged the sensor but the fuel light is still on! I even took the cover of to see if it might have been something underneath but no luck, anybody else got any ideas?

Thanks

My first guess would be the level sender having a loose connection or the float mechanism sticking. You would need to remove the pump assembly to inspect it though.

Sometimes a full tank of fuel can settle the float back to normal.

I had all the float etc out and I think it may be a sender issue... is it possible to replace just the sender? does anyone have the pt number or is this a case of whole unit replacement... MOT in a few days time :s lol!

I have had the whole unit out and multimetered it and this is still a problem, I don't want to do the age old remove the light trick because I do actually use the light as a guide being a student and all :( Multimeter measured resistance and the actual fuel gauge still registers an amount of fuel! Just the low level light... any help please?

i got the same problem, but i always read the gauge not the light.
altho i want light off, i thought it may have been a sticking float.
