sure its the box? def worth replacing syncros if youre opening the box, certainly 2nd,third and 4th. think they are 20 quid each from toyota. i also put in the gt 1st gear to even the ratios up, it all fitted no problem, thats when i knew the 4wd box was built to gt spec.

i drove it to a transmission specialist and got im to have a listen. he said it sounded like the main or layshaft bearings!

is it really worth fitting the GT 1st gear? i dont find it that bad!

i got mine done for drag racing. on the 4wd first gear you change for 2nd and the engine falls out of the cooking zone , you sit waiting for the turbo to spin up again. the 4wd 1st gear is 3.5 and the gt one is 3.1 so a noticable difference, must say dunc yours is the first ive heard of with wear on any part of the drivetrain(apart from viscous coupling)

ive launched mine wet and dry for 2 years with up to 312hp at one time and nothing shows any wear at all. cant help thinking the viscous coupling leaks because of corrosion or physically getting hit by something as power doesnt seem to break it. have noticed the transfer box shows signs of heating up a bit but ive kept good oil in it.

when my gearbox was opened up there was no wear on anything apart from the syncros.

it is a strange one i must admit. ive had a new viscous coupling, propshafts rebuilt (due to knackered uj's) and when i get it out, the gearbox overhauled.

hopefully it will be able to put up with some stick once its all done ;)

You have went the wrong way Spuddy.
Syncros dont slow anything down, they along with the syncro hub speed up the next gears, syncro and hub so it flows into gear smoother..
If it slowed things down it would give off a hell of a crunch at high rpm.

Whoops :p when I was typing it I was trying to get it right in my head lol.

I stand corrected :)

bumping this up! as am going to get my bits this week,iv just been in toyota there, and for a start hes not sure which syncros i need, and neither am i.lol.so am going to have to guess an hope there right,as he says toyota wont take them back! wel he would if they where in stock but they need ordered in so thats the problem with refund.

he was also saying about i should change the bearings an theres a plate aswel? anybody change these bits when rebuilding there gearbox??
and theres 6 syncros in total yes? 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th,an reverse.canyting else am missing?

cheers

Fairly sure there is no syncro for reverse. Get yourself 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear syncros, if he orders you the wrong one then he'll have to take it back cause its his error so his problem.

Is it the wee needle bearings he's on about? They're probably ok to be honest but you won't know to its opened.

yea he said theres 6 showing up?2 on the 1 shaft or somting??to me i was mixed up listen to him,he tryed showing me the graph's but they look abit weird to me.lol
see i dont no which gearbox i have! weather is gt or glanza box! its showin him part numbers allright but some is differant an hes not sure which exact ones i need,so its a chance on my part yano. duno said theres 2 bearings an a plate plate is 60 euro and the bearnings is 30 each or somting, said they replace them on cars in for gearbox work in the garage and would be worth doing for me aswel.(i know the guys so hes not tryn to sell me parts i dont need or that)incase you think that.lol

From memory theres 2 syncros on shaft 1, 2 on shaft 2 and 1 on a third shaft, the parts are fairly universal in the 2 boxes. I'd be fairly sure you have a GT box going by terminals and when you change into 4th gear on the strip.

a price list and part numbers would b great.
all gears, syncros and hubs + bearings all listed would be great,
i got quoted £700 to do a basic rebuild so there are companys out there who will rip you off.
if we had in idea of prices then we could help stop that.

yea spuddy, thats sound right!
wel syncros are coming to 120 euro, then if i get these bearns thats 30 euro a peice an theres 2 of them, then this plate thing, thats another 60 euro, think thats realy it and hopen the gears are all ok,then its just the 2 oil seals where the drive shafts go in,there about 8 euro each or somting. prices have discount to me aswel so they are slightly dearer to buy

Thought I'd add that I bought a gearbox seal kit today from Toyota in Belfast. Suits the manual GT boxes, part number 04331-12080 and cost £26.06 (gbp) plus the vat. Made more sense than buying two seals on their own for a tenner each.

Will update with pics when I get a chance to work at the be-atch. Sat for months outside on the gravel just waiting for me to move it onto a lovely clean garage floor then dumped a box full of gear oil all over the place. I swear it's doing this to test me..
