my mate took off his cams without putting the service bolt in,(i forgot to tell him lol) and when we have come to put it back in its now untensioned and noisey, my cams are the same and i have tried with both to spin them back into tension but they just spin and then hit a stop and not go springy (lol, sorry for crap term ). can some one tell me if it is possible to retension the cams if u forget to put in a service bolt.

cheers

put a pair of long nose or whatever into the cam cog while some one hold it and twist it colck wise and fit an 8 mill bolt in the gap..

are you meaning that when you twist it it has no tension either way...?

If you twist it anticlockwise it won't turn, you need to go clockwise and force it against the spring, it's quite a tough spring so you'll prob need a hand.

I put the thin cog into the vice with soft grips so not to damage the teeth and then spun the cam untill a bolt could go into the hole.

ok so i turn it anti clockwise and then it will go really stiff which is the spring its hitting i assume, i must have thought it was a stop when in fact it was a tough spring

cheers guys

Hello,

Has anyone done this?

I did the same and just whipped it off without the bolt. But when I came to tension it up. It was fairly simple. It was like an 1/8 turn then locked a bolt in there. Wasn't a tough job at all to do. Pair of gloves to stop tearing my hands and a vice to hold the cams.

Just want to know that it's not a complete revolution but a short turn?

when you start feeling the tension its only about 1 full theet further if ur on ur own use a flat head screwdriver betwen the 2 cogs and push down gently thats how i do it

there is only this gap between the clip to move wich is pretty narrow 1s refitted

Don't remember it being too much hassle last time I had to do it (middle of last year sometime so details are hazy) so I think you're fine mate.

woah f**k. 12 years messing my my starlet and ive missed this... didnt even know it was spring loaded on the inlet cam, this might explain my slight valvetrain noise even though my clearances are good.
will retension mine next weekend as the cams have been in and out loads of times over the last few years and never used the service bolt!
learn summat new everyday :D like RTFM lol
(read the fkin manual)
