do you have to remove it to see if it is in trouble, it is not leaking and there is no play in the outer shaft(belt removed).

They would be the first checks, but the impellers inside are what do the pumping so if you still have your doubts, take it right off.

i will do that, if its ok im certain its the headgasket, it looks straighforward but im not sure on the timing, wud i be correct in saying top end(4e on crank matchs mark on head)? bottom end is where im confused.

Cheers
Shane.

Pull the heater hoses off at the bulk head and run the engine, if plenty of coolant runs out then the pump is doing it's job.

The timing belt doesn't need to come off to remove the water pump.

The first signs of the water pump failing through age, wear and tear is when the two weep holes on the pump start to cry. This is water that has breached the seal in the pump which lets the water get into the pumps bearings and causes a failure.
