what is a pcv valve?

mine does the exact same. somtimes when sitting in traffic i can get plenty of white smoke out the exhaust (smells of burning oil so its not steam) but i put it down to a dodgy pcv valve. it doesnt happen all the time when sitting idle just maybe one out of every ten times. any ideas?

Sure is mate.

Can't see it causing any problems, probably just the grommet that goes around where it meets the rocker cover... do you have any symptoms? Smokeyness etc?

no mate, but was reading in another topic that could cause smoking if blocked? i dont think mine is blocked but seems like broken and just placed in,

Well, if you seen the part numbers in the other thread you could always try a new one. Personally, I'd just leave it as is, if it ain't broke don't fix it and all that :p

Then again, if the oil its letting out of the rocker cover bothers you then it makes sense to replace it. I've seen first hand that this can cause the car to be a little smokey if its faulty (not sure why though).

cheers mate, yeah but you know, its always best to ask and be sure than leave things as they are and will damage anything ;)

my thinking of it is its leaves it smokey because the engine cant breathe and then the engine will "block up" with gas which results in bits of oil be pushed upwards passed the rings and gets burned

when the pcv valve is blocked its like the opposite happening when youve normal blow-by gas except it blows upwards into the chamber as opposed to blowing downwards

also can somebody explain the differet job a pcv valve does compared to the breather thats on the other side of the rocker cover?

ive just spent a good bit of my day in work having a good look around my engine as its started to smoke also. Its only a few times at idle and when it does it bellows out the exhaust. just aswel i stumbeled on this thread.
to me it seems like blue smoke tho. and when I raise the revs it stops.

i was suspecting my pcv valve as it is very brittle (so brittle that i broke it and the gromet surrounding it)

think il order one in work tomorrow and post the results.
