a guy I knew who went travelling ended up running out of money, sold his passport for nearly 800 quid and went to the embassy and got an eergency one for a lot less
At the minute you have more information than we have - his passport should have an address and a photograph of him on it. It also stops him leaving the country.
I'd give him the benefit of the doubt until you find out what's happened. If he's just avoiding you then you are entitled to be mad/disappointed. If however he's lying in intensive care it's a different story.
