Why are starlets so uncomfortable

I like Jay's suggection earlier of a cushion but seriously your saying changing tyre profile will still be too bumpy , so should I raise the suspension then to get more travel to get the rubber down at the rear? or is their another way?

Seriously if you have 50 profile and go to 60 - the comfort would be much better around 25% I'd say! But also the handling would be worse -)))

remove the 17"s and put 15"s on, will be a massive difference in comfort and handling and acceleration

Is that that about the same for 16's ? Currently have no wheel spin and am keen to avoid understeer when high speed powering through corners in the wet.

Thanks for your responses , I see now most of my handling issues are coming from the rigid rear axle lifting up the other tyres on excessive and wrong road camber. Are their better options for the rear axle?

if you want comfort buy a beemer! if not deal with it :). preformance = uncomfort. imagine it like a hot chick... if you dont want other fella's stairing @ your gal, or trying to pull her evry night shes out be with a minger you will never be worried about her going out & dude's trying to pull her, if you want to be with the hot gal you just got to deal with all of what comes with it lolol..! the be biggest pain in the arse with my starlet was how noisey it was, allways noking & squeeking ha!

John, Actually in wet the smaller the wheel size the better! Look at the WRC cars see what wheels they've got when it's wet or ice and snow in Sweden and have a look what wheels they use in Spain when it's nice and hot! They will use smaller wheels with bigger profile and the actual tyre would be narrow, compared to very low profile in Spain with bigger and wider wheels!

As you live in Australia I would stick with 16-17" low profile tyres, but if you want more comfort change your tyres to a slightly bigger profile.

What tyres have you got by the way? size/profile, etc... ???

Brand new BMW got low profile tyres (40) and they're pretty comfortable because of the European suspension! However in heavy rain, Ice and Snow you better keep your BMW parked at home!

So what 15' tyres do you say are comfortable?

195/45/15 - 557
195/50/15 - 577
195/55/15 - 595
205/40/15 - 545
205/45/15 - 565
205/50/15 - 587

I love a car you can feel the road in but not every single road joint. Reducing the noise inside the car that is a fair comment as that would reduce the noise impact of an uneven ride.

I have KUMO 205/40ZR17 847XL max psi 50
These had a good road test report for the price and hang on a long time but I'm told do let go fast at their limit.

the 17's are far to big,

the ideal size fopr starlets is 195/50/15, you can put 16's on at a push but the 15's are best,

try the 15"s and see what u think, i'm pretty sure you stick with them, loads of others on here have done this and then stuck with the 15"s

Well 195/50/15 it's something in the middle between comfort and handling it's not too bad on handling and not too bad on comfort -))))) If you go 195/55/15 - then you will increase the comfort and slightly reduce handling, but those tyres are pretty rare! If you got 195/45/15 then you will get better handling and feel almost every stone on the tarmac -) Don't go 205 - the only place 205 would be good is on the rear axle as this would help on the corners, but 205 in front is way too much (but some people do) for a starlet as a standard wheel size is 175 or depending on the model 185!

Its seems a 50mm wall is needed to gain some comfort. Current 17" 205/40/17 - 596

I am shooting for around 580dia wheels for torque , I see there really are no 16"s with 50mm wall and ok torque so I am left with :

205/40/16 - 570
195/45/16 - 582
195/50/15 - 577
205/50/15 - 587

Well the interesting thing is I found my Tyres are much smaller than is usual for 17" Rims.

My front tyres 205/40/17 when measured are 580 dia ( not 596 dia )
I guess that makes the side wall a very comfy 32mm._ _ _ and I hear you asking what about the back tyres? Yes they are 205/40/17 and a generous 590mm dia.

Probably not a good idea to mix different tyre brands?

Do what i do!, I use a cheap mitsubishi colt during the week, dont have to worry about it - leaving it in car parks etc, cheap and comfortable. Keeps the glanza clean and use it just for the weekends.

Having 2 cars you double your expenses - insurance, tax, mot, tyres, brakes - service, parking space....... good idea but not cheap!

In oz we have insurers that will insure based on the travel you do in the car so I guess you could divide insurance over 2 cars , sometimes these products are aimed at the elderly who don't travel much .
