who runs aftermarket ecu's?

This thread is MASSIVE !!! Amazing read, even if it did take me nearly 2 hours:p:p

Alot of valid points for all aspects of ECU's. I have questions about F-CON but feel this thread is too indepth to bring it back down to my "layman" terms :p
Ask you questions. We are all either here to help or learn from each other. The answers given will also add to my pool of knowledge so by all means ask your questions.

Fire Away. I only am familar with the PFC F-CON, and the FCONV. I've seen variants such as the FCONS and such floating around.

The FCON was my first choice for a piggyback, but since I like digital gauges it was better to buy the SAFC.

Whats the 3112 rom for the fcons? Im looking at one just now but reading through some threads im getting the impression that its an MR2 chip? So will be for hybrids and TD04's ect. If it did have this chip, would it still be able to run a CT9 @1 bar? Or would the piggyback be too strong for it (no matter what setting you had it on) Also is using an EGT safe enough to set-up fcon for the above boost on CT9?

I covered this on my site. It is possible run different ROMs in the FCON from different cars. It just has to be wired in properly. Even in the PowerFC the MR2 unit was adapted to the Starlet.

The FCON's programming would be for a stock to lightly modded MR2, and its fuel curves and targets are based around that. My friend ran a starlet FCON to 250whp, but he had to get the GCC as the dials in the unit couldn't run a programme to suit his set up. It was either to rich or lean. The FCON actually increases injector duty cycle which is something the SAFC cannot do.

Basically just try it, like he did. Just keep turning until you find a setting that best matches your fuel needs. If you can't I'd suggest you get rid of it and get an Emanage. The finer tuning ability and the ability to change timing will be worth it.

microtech is stand alone

thing is i have a strange blip at about 1800 rpm. it like the key is flicked off for a milli second was thinking that 2 map sensors could be my problem..

Well JDM tuners tend to prefer EGT, because its a better indicator of what's going on in the engine. However, most dynos use a/f meters which work just fine.

EGT changes according to a TON of things. You can't tune a car on EGT, especially a turbo one... Only thing EGT is worth while is:

1. for learning if your system has a bottleneck which causes exhaust gases not to escape as fast as they should
2. if you have an ecu that retards ignition on knock, a sudden rise in EGT will mean that ignition has started retarding
3. to use 4 egt gauges with an appropriate controller (like aem's) to compare temp from each cylinder so you can adjust fueling per cylinder

for example, my EGT at 0.8 bar is 830C at 7600rpm... at 1.5 i have 940C at the same rpm. in both cases AFR is the same, about 11.7 AFR. so you understand ,if you tune fuel according to egt, you are either gonna have one slow ass car, or a nice pile of metal in your oil pan.

i thought goldenvtr tuned his car himself using an egt readout? was back in the day when he first fitted his td04

I agree with you Aga, I've had high EGTs and running rich, however how many a/f meters have you seen on JDM cars. We had a professional JDM tuner here several times and he uses an EGT guage. He doesn't ignore the other factors. If you're running rich and have a high EGT then he'd reduce the fueling or timing because obviously its not an issue directly related to them. As far as he was concerned the EGTs tell you more of what is going on the engine faster than the a/f reading. To quote someone, by the time the a/f meter sees it usually its too late.

If you look in the back of the FCON manual, it recommends EGT tuning.

I agree the EGT reads a lot faster than the A/F gauge. I am sure you guys have heard of map overlay and that is the way our tuner tunes all the standalone ECU'S such as the DTA / Microtech/ Haltec as well as the eManage Blue and Ultimate piggybacks. Rory I understand your preference for the Access because of your distrust of the local tuners. However if you need an excellent tuner he is just a short flight away in Miami. The cars are tuned for daily driving as well as track duty. For example on one car with a built 5EFHE (Carillo rods, CP pistons, Master Power T3 turbo, 440cc injectors, adjustable FPR, 4EFTE loom/ECU/distributor/coil/ignitor plus eManage Blue), it is tuned for 20PSI daily driven and when he goes to the track he adds race gas, turns up the boost to 24PSI and he is ready to go. At 24PSI this car makes 311WHP on race gas.

Well nothing compare to the fantastic numbers they get on jamacia on pump gas. LOL
BTW artmull, i belive your hp on racegas.
