Every now and then the computer seem's to freeze for around 2seconds, the mouse still moves etc but if im typing that stops if i press back on web browser it takes few secs etc its just really weird, Could this be down to the Ram? not too sure what else would cause this?

well it's clearly not the computer as you said the mouse is still active, so i'm guessing this happens on the Internet, has it only happened recently? just sounds like a slow ip. do you have wireless or run straight off the Ethernet?

could just be the gay giraffe porn though lmao!

but in all serioussness ive got an old pc upstaris, and thats slow - and displays similar symptoms to yours, slow reaction times etc when on the net - sometimes get an error message about virtual memory too low - i put it down to it being a rubbish pc.

lots of things could be causing it mate.

A good way to troubleshoot issues like this is to check task manager and see if you are using most of your available RAM this will tell you is you need more.

It could be a hardware conflict, I had that with one of my computers in the past. Best thing to do is disconnect everything except the kyboard mouse and monitor and use the computer and see if it still happens.

It seems to be using 500mb out of 2gb ram although now and then it spikes pretty high, as does the cpu usage, even with no programs open etc, done it even when i had only installed windows xp pro edition on my system with a fresh install?

yeah could well be ram related but could also just be your graphics card playing silly buggers as it seems to me that it runs fine but the screen freezes?

find out how much ram you have and how much it is using on idle (no programs running) this will give you a rough indication of how much you have left for it to run the programs.

also you could have a faulty graphics card causing the freezing on the screen maybe, just throwing potential ideas out there.

if it's old, computers just like to die and play up...old processor, small ram doesn't amount to fun times... perhaps download a fault checker of google to run a full scan of your system and diagnose any potential problems. could even be virus in your registry messing up the operating system.

i'm swaying towards a virus related problem maybe, if it's in the registry it's going to be almost imposble to find and delete.

if it's using ram and cpu with no programes running something isnt right.

it's hard to diagnose over the Internet...also i would look into the graphics card, mine played up for a bit and if it is playing up it will make the screen mess up and do strange things when it has to calculate graphics

you could check the graphics card actually just run a shit load of images on the screen (jpeg) at the same time as a quick time mov or something and see how it handles it lol. (just sounds like a night of porn lmao!)

It cant be a virus if its the same after a format and fresh install

If you have 2GB of RAM its unlikely to be RAM related.

Mate Ive had all sorts of issues with machines Ive built. Had one weird one where the case was touching the MB and shorting something out and it used to happen randomly was a pain in the arse to find and fix.

Take my advice....

Strip the machine down take out any cards that are not 100% required, sound card, lan card etc.

If there is onboard graphics on the motherboard then take out your graphics card and use the onboard graphics and turn the machine on and see if it all works okay then start adding hardware one bit at a time until the machine becomes unstable.

Also it might be worthwhile checking for bios updates for your motherboard.

Also worth checking CPU and system temps and make sure your machine is not running hot.

Also... what wattage power supply are you using? power supplies are often something that people scrimp on and can cause all sorts of issues with machine stability.

The PSU is 500w's which wasn't cheap, the system doesnt have onboard gfx but it does have onboard sound + lan, the only card in there is gfx card, I remeber on the odd occasion i got the blue screen of death, never stayed visable for long enough to see what it was referring to as it'd reset, although this stopped its self?

@ Sheldon lmao

Thanks for the help guys

asware will do this so use superantispyware to remove any. also top right on your browser click tools then manage add ons. then temp disable all add ons. if this works start to enable them one by one till a certain one starts messing up ur comp again. then leave that one disabled. :freddy:
