Driveshaft support bearin?

The only gear oil leaks I've had to deal with have been related to the seal itself, usually after the inner joint has been removed and refitted. I'd guess that a decade old seal doesn't like being disturbed just. Replacements are usually around £15 from Toyota and all you do is carefully prise the old one out with a screwdriver without marking the contact surface on the housing. The new one just needs knocked back in, be sure to push it in equally around the entire seal and be careful not to damage it at the same time mate.

so Jay, the scarring on the trannie cup shaft are unlikely to promote the leak..? i'm hoping to just swap it out if i can get a replacement. what stunned me is that i didn't touch the trannie cup -- didn't remove it and the leak just started after the car had sat for a while as i did my brake transplant.. :/

actually come to think of it, the seal 'bites' much farther out on the shaft so i doubt it too.. :)

Yeah, never had to replace the inner cup in the time I've worked on these cars. I'd say you 10+ year old seal could be the culprit, the wear you are seeing is probably common enough. I'll have a look at some spare driveshafts later and report back if they differ.

amount of play

may i also add that when i hammered the cup back in to test how it sits, there was quite some play (left-right/up-down). not sure what the expected play is on these things but i felt the 2~3mm play i was getting was a bit much..? :/
