I really like Hondas but I have to say that all the talk of vtec is a bit crap. Its a method of making an engine give a bit more power and more importantly keep it economical around town. It is NOT like a turbo. It is a different engine note and makes the car accelerate a tiny bit faster... it does not feel ANYTHING like a turbo so if you are dying to "feel vtec" you will be very disappointed.

Remember that vtec is used in their people carriers etc.... it is a technology for making the car more economical not a reaplcement for a turbo.

Extremely good point there dylan....

I would say though the Vtec makes it a fair amount faster in comparison to a normal 2.0L 16V N/A engine it produces a good 40-50HP more by using the Vtec....

But i do agree with you, Its certainly no Jet replacement lol.

but its still N/A dude...

I dont look at vtec as being performance enhancing... I look at it as having a different cam profile to allow it be more economical for when you are not driving it quickly. Some people look at it as some sort of mythical performance enhancement... I look at it as making a well tuned relatively powerfull engine less powerfull for when you dont require the power and prefer economy.

It would be like using the hi/low boost button and saying well its amazing how powerful the high boost button makes things... just run the thing in high boost all the time! :)

I drove an intergra type r with a few mods, it was an amazing car to drive and sounded awesome too, just not the same as turbo though, but i still want one!

Very good point again.... I see what your saying now.

Its the way the engine is built just using a different cam profile to up shift all the power higher up and also get a good gain.... Similar principle to a stock N/A coming out of factory with a more aggressive cam set up.

On this note though dylan im sure the Vtec engine generally has far more potential on an N/A set up once tuned with throttle bodies etc....

I think i remember seeing a civic type are (2.0litre) with 280HP N/A without NOS.. I cant say ive actually seen another 2.0litre N/A car tuned to this sort of power without using gas even with the most aggressive cams out there/ECU the lot. Unless you can prove me otherwise?

If what im saying is right then the Vtec engine as a whole has something another N/A engine could never have? Still N/A yes but the Vtec could be classed as something a bit different to your normal N/A engines.

As i said unless im wrong.

Im not inputting in this thread to prove anyone wrong/otherwise etc Dan. Just merely stating that in my opinion if you were hoping for a "feeling of vtec" you would be disappointed... well at least I was.

I do not dispute in any way shape or form that honda engines are great and that is why I am considering an s2000 but I wont be climbing into it expecting miracles. The talk of "vtec kicking in" makes it sound like its a boot in the ass.. it isnt.. no more than Toyotas vvtl-i is.

I also think that the term N/A should not really be used in this thread as it confuses matters further by distinguishing between vtec engine and "normal N/A engines"... a vtec honda engine is an N/A engine unless you charge it.

The truth of the matter is that a lot of manufacturers have similar technologies as vtec but without charging they are still just N/A engines and never "feel" like a turbo.

That is not to say these engines cannot develop huge power and the delivery will suit some drivers better than a turbo will but I think the "feel of vtec" is somewhat of a myth... Ive driven a few and have heard a change in engine note and felt a bit more pull but nothing a good gust of wind behind the car wouldnt give lol.

oh no dylan i didnt mean proving me wrong in that way, i genuinely meant unless you know of another car/cars of which had very similar gains, thats all i meant mate :)

I guess its the person behind the wheel opinion as theres alot of talk on these vtecs, some think it feels amazing and others think its boring or far from impressive...

I went out in a friends CRX the other week which had around 170hp and that felt really well... Vtec kicked in aggressively and all round was a fun little car. I was pretty impressed. However, im fixed on the the view that the sound is a huge illusion of speed on these things. makes you feel like your flying and you look down and the speedo really isnt going too crazy lol.

agree with ya there Dan. I would be delighted with an Integra or Civic type R but would be disappointed if I was expecting a big bang at certain revs. I actually prefer the fact that the power is really linear. Guess its very subjective :) Idress first post really summed up how I felt when I first drove a honda

You know an arial Atom has a 2.0 VTEC with a supercharger on!
Bet that goes some:)
My EK9 is a good fun. 185BHP from a 1600 is brilliant, and handling to match.
It feels slow up to just over 6000 revs, then it goes mental and sounds like an F1 car all the way up to around 9000 revs. Thing is once in VTEC you can keep it in VTEC through the gears as its geared just right so its a useful machine, you just have to get used to it.
