i got pulled one time and the copper asked if i had changed the exhaust and i hadnt but i was like sure itl hardly matter anyway and he brought out a sheet with the law on it all highlighted and i read it and they have to rite to tell by 'listening' if the exhaust is too loud or not! so...unless its standard your safe, my advice and experience, be nice to them and respect them and they are 99% of the time of with you!

so true , i find this works

i was told 85db, mine was around 99 and failed.

Hmm, perhaps I'm wrong. I know the limit used to be 110dB, perhaps it's dropped in recent years. I'd say mine was quite a bit over 85dB, probably closer to the 105 mark and I've not had any noise related issues since I've had her.

I'll have a search on the VOSA site, see if I can dig the figure up. Either way, the comment stands (Even if the actual figure is wrong :p)

Never been done by a coppper or pulled over by one for anything on my cars.

Illugal front tints though, just get rid of them as its going to look odd if in winter your driving round with the windows down and its pissing it down with snow.

As for the exaurhst level. I would contest the fine all the way if its fully legal.

I got pulled by a copper the other day for my exhaust.

he was ok tho to be fair to him. He said if it was day time (was about 2am) he would have called out a noise test on it. I think it only seemed louder to him cos it was night no one else was around and he was sat with his windows down. I was only overuning down the hill lol.

Anyway like i said he was ok about it, just advised i look into it as it may fail. he also said he thought my num plate spacing was wrong (which it isnt, maybe for a UK plate but not a jap one) Also noted on my tyre's lack of sidewall LOL.

The legal limit CANNOT be 85db...... My Mk1 MR2 made about 92db or more at 4500rpm with a stock exhaust!!!

this is what i was told by my local VOSA inspection centre. he gave a +/-5db allowance, mine just passed at 90db.

I like the idea of broken windows. :p

Also, I was reading somewhere you can install a device (I've completely forgotten how it works...this was years ago) with which you can enable and disable the noise your exhaust emits at the touch of a button. I'd love to see his face when you show him how quiet your car is, and then drive off with an earpiercing roar.

Where did you here that little nugget of bullshit? Any car used on UK roads MUST have a number plate that conforms to UK law. It doesn't matter where it's from. End of. If you do have Jap plates fitted, don't take the piss with the number spacing and size and you should get away with it. I've got a motorbike plate on the front (8x8 ish). The plate isn't of a UK legal size (for a car), but because the Starlet is quite small and because the way the numbers are spaced and sized, they make the plate look larger than it actually is and (touch wood) I've not had any hassle off the Police about it. :)

Yes, it's an exhaust Valve. Aston Martins have them as stock. The route gas through the whole system when cruising about to keep noise down, then they cut out the majority of the system to reduce the restriction and give the exhaust a sexy bark. You can buy these units, but I'm not sure how much or how effective they are. It's far easier to just make sure the exhaust you have fitted is under the legal requirements.

Why do you think, when you get pulled over for X reason, that the Police Officer is generally being cocky or arrogant? I bet you think he is a cock, yes? Massive, massive fail. Granted, some Officers genuinely are cocks, but they are in the minority. Much like those that drive modified cars. Funny that.

You see, driving a modified car, you carry a certain stigma. It doesn't matter if you drive the JUN Skyline and are minted, or drive some Budget Barry Corsa covered in stick on tat and wheeltrims, to the Police, they see us as the same. The opposite works too. It doesn't matter if it's a standard Officer, Dog Unit or Traffic, they all wear the Queens uniform so we regard them as the same. How many times do you think a Traffic Officer has pulled over a young driver in a modified car and received nothing but a torrent of verbal abuse? Now, how many times do you think a modified car driver has been pulled over and been on the receiving end of a torrent of abuse from a Police Officer who's sick young welps in modified cars giving them nothing but shit?

I'm always polite to them, even though i despise how arrogant many of them can be.

I get on with some of them - the ones that have a laugh and a joke and don't automatically assume that just because my car is modified that I am a criminal ! I've been told off before for going slightly too fast (not fast enough to get done for without a radar gun), and they've just said "keep the speed down" which is more than fair enough!

But then you get the ones that pick on you when you are driving along the motorway at 60, not tailgating, not contravening ANY law or advice whatsoever, that just want to f*ck you over for something!

Even if it is because they have been given abuse by some chav in a corsa does not mean that they can give me shit for driving a modified car! If they got given abuse from 2 different black people, does that give them the right to give ALL black people shit? NO!

The same applies though. Stay polite and friendly with them. It is very hard to stay angry with someone if they remain polite with you. The Officer is most likely looking to get a rise out of you, probably because Billy Bumpkin in his fucked over Nova gave him shit. If you have been driving sensibly and there is nothing wrong with the car then you have nothing to worry about. :)

I agree, but when they are not angry, but instead want to get their numbers up or just want to show off their "power", there's not much you can do.

And by "nothing wrong with the car", how can my blitz nurspec R with the baffles in (along with a standard manifold and cat) be illegal? He just wanted to find something to do me for!

I don't spend a small fortune buying and modifying my car, insuring it, taxing it, MOTing it and driving it sensibly (mostly lol) just so :cops: can try to f*ck me in the ass!

From a VOSA/DVLA document regarding info on importing cars.

I cant remember the specifics but its something like UK plates are 25mm spacing between letters and something about small plates being 11...

well i got done for my exhaust on friday night for the second time
was 95.6db.
the thing that really bothered me was i wasn't doing anything wrong the started trying to say i was speeding which i wasn't and other cars were passing me but they picked on me.
this must be some kind of discrimination or breech of my human rights
everyone else uses this in court so might try it next time lol
