The downfall is if a newbie has an issue that hasn't been seen or experienced before. Or wants a part number that hasn't been posted before. Or has done a tutorial that they want to post. Etc Etc Etc.

Just highlighting a few senarios by the way, I feel a restriction might be worth a trial period.

They'll just have to wait til they get 50 posts! :p Hahaha...well if they have their own separate noobie area and have exhausted the search option, they could post in there and it be moved to the appropriate forum? I dunno...could lead to more spam/useless threads by lazier people!

Not a bad idea, I think 500 is too high but 50 sounds about right! So they would only be able to post replies in existing threads? So if they have a question about what fuel pressure to run for 1Bar, they will have to either search or reply in an already existing thread about fuelling! I like it! Hopefully it doesn't result in lots of spam where people just post their questions in completely un-related threads!

if that happened Chris their posts would be removed and they would get a warning.

I see it working and having these effects (some of which you just mentioned)

-New members who join the site will feel that being able to open a new thread is actually a privilege so they may be more careful about how they use that when they "earn" it.

-Having to post in existing threads keeps common topics in one thread (or a few threads) not hundreds of threads about "what is stock fuel pressure" etc.

-Despite the myth that the search feature does not work, if used correctly it does actually work. We are on the latest version of Vbulletin now which means the search feature is totally different to how it was and have google indexing also. I do agree picking decent titles etc helps a lot. Perhaps we should look at implementing a rule on thread titles in the tech and for sale sections?

-Total prevention of new members signing up to talk about their "kills"

-Forces new members to look at the structure of threads and gets them using all parts of the forum. When it comes time that they can open their own threads they will know there is a specific place for the thread and a way to ask questions.

-Makes a clear distinction between new members and established members. This i needed in my opinion. It will give new members, particularly younger members, a sense that they have to behave to be allowed post freely like our established members.

I think a FAQ would hit the mark, the search can give too much information and much of it contains contradictions, leading to information overload and in some cases incorrect information.

What I think is needed is a couple of moderated concise FAQs created by member for members, it'll take all the pain out of it. ok who's first ...

What is a FCD ?

We have somethin like that:

its not really the silly questions that annoy me as such, its some of the daft replys giving out some wrong advise.
the faq would be an excellant idea.
what mods are needed to run 1 bar..
what do i need to build a 5efte...
etc etc etc...
and im not sick of the site as such, just the way things have been lately....the 10 cans of beer didnt help matters either as i was typing it all out..lol

and dylan,i like the sound of the idea of having so many posts before a thread can be started.:)

Yeah its worth a shot! I think descriptive thread titles would help with the search a lot. Also, if its possible, make the search button more pronounced? So, maybe a small graphic button rather than the text link...I dunno, might be helpful!

most people hate civics for a bit of banter, it all stems from a couple of years ago when there used to be people constantly asking for comparisons with starlets.

but to be fair there different cars and classes cant really compare them.

your other points i have noticed also and i just choose to ignore them, theres a lot of threads on here now i just dont bother reading them or posting.

i do the same with pm's if people send me silly pm's i just ignore them, as these ype of people arent worth dealing with.

saying that, if people genuinely need advice i will give as much advise as i can, and i wont give advise unless i know 100% thatt i'm correct
