Social welfare has ALWAYS been a problem in this country but its not 'THE' problem. The problem in this country is that we have people in power doing jobs they are not qualified to do and too many of them doing it, from the top down. A public sector job is a guaranteed job for life you CANNOT compare it to the private sector. My simple understanding of how things work is that when you wanted a job you had one of two choices, you took a risk to make big money and went into the private sector and if you lost your job then that was just though shit. Or you took the safe option, chose the public sector and were guaranteed job and pension but sacrificed the possibility of making really good wages.
This government however decided to bring in a thing called 'Bench marking' which basically awarded a group of people all of the positives of having a private sector job to add to all of the benefits they already had in their of the public sector jobs but NONE of the negatives. This is absolutely LUDACRIS. How does anyone think it is ok to pay a manager in the public sector the same wage as a manager in the private sector when if the private sector manger screws up they get sacked but the public sector manager doesn't!!!!
I'll put it this way, im a qualified electrician, if I was working for a contractor and he sent me out to wire a house and i did a shite job I would get fired but if an electrician working for a local council did the same thing he wouldn't be. The council electrician would ALSO be getting a GUARANTEED pension so WHY ON EARTH would he get the same pay as me? I'll tell you why, Irish politics. They made up jobs their buddies when there was no jobs for them and paid them stupid money to do it and they can't get rid of them now even if they wanted to (which they don't because its all their buddies in these jobs).
Its the people that really NEED the dole that are going to be hit the worst. These are the people that are the easiest targets. They very often don't know what they are entitled to and don't bother looking for it either because they feel bad enough even taking the basic dole, its demoralising to say the least. Its the people that make a career out of doing nothing that won't be touched because 'they know their rights' so they will fight and continue to get everything.
I know this sounds bad but what this country REALLY needs is a dictator to come in and just DO what needs to be done and not just go on and on and on telling us what needs to be done and about how bad things are and actually do nothing. A person can live VERY comfortably on €50k plus a year so I say tax the balls out of everyone making more than that and have a maximum wage of €100k a year for at least the next 5 years. Means test EVERYONE and if you can afford it, then pay for it yourself you cheap bastard and if you cant then just give it to them, dont make them apply for it. If your unemployed for more than 6 months then you should have to enter the education system like back to school to get a good Leaving Cert or college (not a stupid shitty FAS course) or if you don't want to do that then you should be doing voluntary work. There should be NO SUCH THING as FREE money.
Also, college fee's are a joke too. How do they expect people to pay those kinds of fee's to go to college? And don't say "well the pay $40k a year in america to go to college" this isn't America and in America you get a student loan that doesn't have to be paid till AFTER you FINISH college and actually have the means to pay it. How is a bloody student with no job (because there aren't any out there) going to pay huge registration fees if there grant is cut and the cant get a part time job. This country's ONLY resource thats worth talking about is its workforce. We have VERY little natural resources, we have almost no industry left (which this government let quietly disappear during the good times) and we're a tiny island state on the periphery of Europe with a shit climate. We may not think it but as a group we are a highly educated, skilled workforce and that needs to continue into the future and the only way for that to happen is to provide the means for EVERYONE to get as much education as they need. They do it in Sweden so just because other countries dont do it doesn't mean that WE shouldn't
