keeping fit

I began taking creatine after having a small cyst removed from my abdomen. I could only perform minor exercises, and I thought this might sustain a fair amount of muscle tone for a month or two while I recovered. After a month of taking it, I (and my girlfriend - whose patience I deeply appreciate) noticed an increase in mood swings and irritability, as well as being quite antsy. After a second month went by, I stopped taking creatine as my workouts were back on track.

Six months later, I sustained a minor rotator cuff injury, and started on creatine again to enhance the recovery process as I exercised using the large 'rubber bands' given me by my physical therapist. I believe that it did, in fact, increase my recovery time and I noticed that irritability and mood swings began to return. This is when I began to think it might be creatine related; however, I wasn't fully convinced since both times I had injuries which made it somewhat difficult to sleep.

Having investigated several Web sites to find if my moodiness was a common side effect of creatine, I found virtually nothing to that effect. I then decided to investigate for myself. I began taking creatine again three months later. After two weeks, I was near full-blown temper tantrums, which would come from nowhere, and last for only minutes. I stopped taking it at that time, and have since calmed to my normal self. After telling a friend about this, he explained that his brother had identical side effects, which stopped a week or two after quitting creatine.

Bear in mind that I was taking about 3/4 of the recommended dosage while drinking the proper amounts of water. I am FIRMLY convinced that creatine causes detrimental cognitive effects in some. Be aware of this.

Because you all said that what I said was rubbish, well there ya go. Don't be saying what other people are saying is rubbish unless you have actually researched what they are saying yourself

edit: I just typed creatine into google and got this link, there are literally tonnes of these such links detailing side effects like: Mood swings, insomnia, irritability, anxiety.

Several of you said I was talking out of my ass, making things up. Pretty narrow minded of ye to just rubbish what someone says without seeking prior knowledge yourselves.

It's still rubbish. Bigger font doesn't make it more credible. Especially when the source claims that creatine was making him moody/anxious/irritable, but instead of stopping his creatine intake he starts taking it again to experiment on himself. Noob or what?

I don't really care about this any more, quite boring just pasting articles willy nilly from the internet.

whoa, back that truck up there now kid! yes creatine is naturally made in your body, that is the whole point. You do not need to supplement your natural creatine production. I am speaking from personal experience here. I regularily am in the team gym with my collges rugby team and many times our chats have gotten onto the subject of creatine. Now maybe they are taking too much, but a close friend of mine (was in my course for the first two years and is on scholarship with my college) described how his sleep pattern was changed, how his mood changed on anhourly basis one time too the point where once he started blubbering like a baby for no reason at all (an 18st rugby player!!) and all the other players I talked too described similar symptons to a certain degree (and know they do not take steroids as they are drug tested). The average person who just wants too get fit does not need creatine. All im saying is that people seem too be talking openly in this thread about creatine and less experienced people may be reading this thinking its gods gift! All im doing is trying to highlight the side effects and I would urge people too do research before using. I play sport too a very high level and I have never used supplements. I can do a 4.20 mile and a sub 11 second 100m, oh and I managed to run the whole way up Ben Hope this summer:rockon:

I also am not blessed with what you describe above, I also know people who are and ya it sucks because I have to work twice as hard then them. BUT I could outrun them anyday so it doesnt bother me in the slightest! I dont really need that much/any bulk for my sport...just conditioning mainly. Like im up at 30kg with dumbells and I could go more but thats plenty for what I need.

This thread is termed keeping fit. Somewhere along the way I think this thread has lost its focus. Going too the gym and doing just bulkbuilding workouts and/or just weights/weight orientated machines will not make you fit. Sure it will make you look better and stronger but none of those machines or weights will take you anywhere close too your optimal bpm and will not really excercise lungs etc.

If you want to get fit then go play 6 a side twice a week/ play some squash/tennis etc etc. That will make you fit! And then if you feel thats not enough/or you want too add too your strenght then hit the gym and do as I mentioned above a balanced workout..working cardio/conditioning and core.

KID ye pal loads!! go play hockey u just got stunned....... and i dnt tink 1person on hear has agreed with u... so what if u play HOCKEY!! i played for ireland in the same underage teams more pro's now than i cud prob even name... like whats ur point...! also i dont care how fast u can run.. u stated that creatine u make u crazy and i proved u rong...! and so what if sum aids there training its no dif to a energy drink, unless its a steriod or illegal!

the bloke who started this thread requestd avide on suplementation, i merly gave my opion, and what / how i use it!

I never stated that using creatine makes you crazy. I merely shared the experiences that I have heard from other people.

I have no problem with people aiding their training with supplements, I personally just do not believe they are necessary.

I am merely making the point that there are side effects and too be careful. Just making it clear too people that do not know that much about supplements that there are side effects. I think its important too talk about the positives and negatives when deciding on something.

As for my own personal fitness, I was merely pointing out what I have achieved without supplements, just too show that they are not nececceasry too get fit, that is all.

And how exactly did you prove me wrong? By posting some link? Well done! I just posted a link back does that make you wrong? I am not looking for a right and a wrong. I am just warning people that is all.

Well i'll let you guys know if my mood starts changing. As i said ive started taking cyclone, Im gona give it a couple of tubs or so and see how i feel. When i go to the gym i do a real extensive workout leaving my muscles sore, so giving the creatine a try to see if i can speed the recovery process up, also cyclone contains alot of protein too, so though its the best of both worlds. I get my tubs at 20% off so not too expensive. Also gona do it 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off.

I'll keep this thread updated.

EDIT, be easy on GT_Irl, he is just sharing what hes read and what his friends have experienced. Hes not saying its a fact but a possibility.

You have to be open minded about these things.

articles backed up from my first hand experience that echoes the symptoms described in the article too a t! Right down too the point where when he came off the creatine the symptoms went away.

I cant be bothered with this either. If everytime I share my experiences with people they shove it back down my throat then whats the point?

You say rubbish Chris, well thats your opinion and I fully respect that. Just keep in mind that I have absolutly nothing too gain by lieing. I will ask the lads what creatine they were using, maybe that was the problem.

edit: thanks Dan and best of luck with your training!:)

Cyclone?! Ur mad mate, its a complete rip off. Go onn myprotein.com, buy a big bag of ultrafine blended oats, a bag of flaxseed oil, a bag of high grade plain whey and a bag of creatine. I think it comes to about 35 quid. It makes about 4.5kg worth of a highly nutritious shake, minus the stupid price tag and disgusting amounts of sugar.
Have a look dude, very good site! :)

also, are u eating well mate? jus train right and eat a dirt amount of food; then use supplements when thry are a convenience. Always spend ur doe on the food, not the supplements. The amount of cash Ive wasted on progain, cyclone etc. They may have good nutrients but they also have aload of shit added to them.
Just thinking of ya wallet! ;)

on the subject on creatine, i have been taking it a couple of years on and off, had lots of trouble with 'shin splints' and my legs. recently when i go out running i've been getting what i thought was compartment syndrome. researched it a bit on the net and went to see the doc as im pretty pissed off with it all. found out some ppl reckon creatine can induce compartment sydrome, increasing the water retention in the muscles and there isnt enough room in the sheath for the muscle to expand anymore in my legs. getting a referal to a specialist, but since weds im off the creatine and have not had the running troubles, been sunday and this morning for longer runs that i've previously been doing and seems fine so far. not going to tempt fate just yet though.

For starting out then increasing your diet is the way to go, and perfectly adequate to supply extra nutrients that are required to build muscle tissue.

Once you start progressing then protein supplements are essential to provide the extra amino acids your body needs.

Maximuscle is completely over priced. Reflex are one of the best in my opinion, but regardless of that I buy whatever protein is cheapest at the time.

I'm using Met-Rx Supreme Whey at the moment, it has 81 servings that give me a similar amount of protein as 100 grams of chicken.

8.1KG of chicken would be rather more expensive than £30, more like £80+, not to mention the cost of cooking it, the time taken to eat it, wash up, hot water, soap, sponges etc - that's why supplements are fantastic, but only when you actually get to the stage of needing them.
