The Dreaded Search Button

I would agree, there's a lot of crap in the way of the useful stuff. It's a sad side-effect of our population size but I can't get the time required to sort the tech section the way I'd like it just yet.

I find the advanced search option is the best as you can tailor which sections it will search thereby ignoring the chillout room, sales forums, etc. Or you can search for a particular persons posts instead - input someone reliable and you should get some sane answers.

What Jay said. Also my personal view is that the search is quicker and has more advanced options then the old site so i prefer it.

dont think the issue is the search button, i find when you ask a question people are very quick to reply with "use the search button" these days.

thats no use to anywayone.

I would agree. Problems arise when you are asked the same question for the dozenth time inside a week.. Just as well there's no webcam here! :D

i think if someone tell you to use the search button it means that its been covered A LOT so there should be hundreds of examples.

When i first started i searched for all the info i wanted first and then asked to fill in the gaps. Most of the stuff i wanted to know had been covered on more than one occasion just in that week alone.

Try using the advanced search tool, that way you can narrow it down a bit.

advanced search is definatly the way forward ignore everything said in the chill out room! i have spent a while searching through threads before but normally come up with things ok in the end!

yes i agree the advance search is much better, but the main problem is the amount of general rubbish within threads, peeps should be alot more cautious when posting replay's, especially when they have nothing to do with question asked, the amount of people that have been warned on here by mods is silly an they still post rubbish and slate people sorry im getting sidelined, it just frustrates me when we are ALL HERE FOR THE SAME REASON.

i no there aint a lot mods can do as to the rubbish in threads as it cant be monitored 24/7

but it must be emphasized to all that regular of topic slating will not be tolerated, especially when its off topic, just becaouse they dont like idea does not mean its crap, everyones views are different, and lets face facts the world would be a differnt place if people didnt go out on whim sometimes !!!!!!!!!!

sorry thats the bitching over :p

the thing that pisses me off is it doesnt like words les that 4 letters long or whatever it is!

that pisses me off the most

The three letter limit annoys me too.

I think the off-topic chat is something that comes along as part & parcel of a 'club site', as TGTT has grown the technical aspect has taken a backseat to proceedings. We have a lot more than the mechanical aspects to look after now and if we trimmed the chillout room, legal section, meets sections, etc out then we would lose a lot of what has been achieved.

I'd love a little more focus in the technical section to be truthful. If anyone can offer a better layout or way of dealing with topics I'd like to hear them. There's a goldmine of info in there that is buried below repeated questions, random garbage and unnecessary bitching.

I do agree but it something that goes on on all the forums and will never change.

In some cases it would be just as quick to give the answer rather than typing use the search button!

just have a more comprehensive FAQ or have a section for newbie question posts that can be modded by the guys with the most knowledge

I'm currently working on EP-FAQ which is designed to be an easy to use source of information. The trouble is, most of the articles need to be manually written.

All in good time though.

i tell you what else would help to reduce all the spam is when someone asks a question, they tend to get the same answer like 3 times from different people. for example, if someone said 'Is it thursday tomorrow?' at least 3 different people will respond saying 'Yes'.

A question where the answer is obvious only takes one response

your right but most of the time there are a lot of various different opinions on the subject. Like if someone asked can i put 10w40 semi synth in my car then most people would say yes but a few would say yes but i prefer 5w30 etc

but i agree where a yes or no answer is concerned then 1 is enough

yes but i mean if the question is black and white or fact, it only needs one person to reply. if your answer is the same as what has already been written, there is no point replying

can you use wildcards with the search facility (+,AND,OR"") etc or is it just keywords?

for example i was looking for the part number for head bolts, but the search returned all sorts of useless stuff, just wondering if there was a way of searching using the keywords exactly as typed.

Agree with all the above comments,
I use the search quite alot, and more often than not find what im after.
but the prob is searching through alot of spam in usefull technical topics.
