Under 19? Unfortunately we cannot offer you insurance

I get a lot of PMs each week from youngsters who are asking for 'rough quotes' on Starlets/Glanzas

two thing I'd like to point out

1) We can not provide 'rough quotes' . We can only provide a quote if you speak to us on the phone... it cannot be done by PM / email. if you want a call back, PM me your name and phone number

2) If you are aged under 19 or have no NCB, we will not be able to offer you insurance.

That is all

I am talking about Sky Insurance insuring under 19 year olds... not other companies... if our competition want to lose money insuring under 19 years old (which they will do) we will not stand in their way. I seem to get a lot of enquirys from under 19 year olds wanting rough quotes via PM hence my post...

In a nut shell, insurance companies do not make money from insuring 17/18 years olds as the claim ratio is so high.

Why do they do it you ask? Because they make their money in other ways.

Dnt be hasty mate i'm not getting on at you; it's not personal but i believe young people who are real enthusiast's (club members etc - some companies offer this as a option when producing a quote) shouldn't be bombarded with massive payments of insurance for there car.

Yeh you may get some chavs that thrash and crash but this shouldnt apply to everyone the same. Just look at the money that goes into the cars on this forum, it's insane!!!

I just think you should be able to offer quotes thats all. If your old enough to be responsible on the road (17 year old in UK). I think your old enough to decide what car you wish to have and be able to drive responsibly.

All of this is my opinion obviously!

Peace out, Jay. :homer:

Ollie isn't debating whether they should be allowed to drive the car or not, is just stating that Sky Insurance do not offer insurance to people under 19 or with 0 NCB, it's all underwriting criteria... I work in finance and it's the same sort of thing, people who can't get a loan elsewhere come to us as we specialise in the "sub-prime" market, Sky Insurance obviously prefer lower risk customers, which is understandable. Should also allow them to give a better quote, should you fit the criteria!

Surely there is a way of getting around this, ignition courses, being a member of this site etc.

and as from not making money insuring younger people, i think with the few that dont claim more than make up for it with there hefty premiums, otherwise it wouldn't be done.

Not having a go like

Jay agree with what you say 100% BUT insurance doesn't work that way... I'm an enthusiast myself and I started off driving a metro and paid £1k+ to insure it... Now I'm 26 and I'm still paying over £1k to insure my turbo converted AW11 Mr2 (not currently with Sky Insurance), so its not just youngsters who get punished! Young drivers have to accept that claims stats are against them hence why they are paying so much for thier insurance. Sky Insurance choose not to insure under 19 year olds and we do not want to lose money!

You'd be surprised bud. I'm a new comer to this insurance game, I used to be a project manager contracted to a large UK bank. It has been a huge eye opener for me as a car enthusiast. One claim that really sticks out for me is a customer who drove the wrong way down a slip road and cause £500,000 + worth of claim... you'd need a fair few policies to make that money back.

Insurance companies are disgusting.

So are banks.

At 19, some 40+ year old crashed into me!

The fastest car to insure at 17/18/19 easily is a standard Daihatsu Charade GTti :p It's group 11 for some reason is still cheap.

Buy it, crash it and then sell me some spares :p

here's something for all the under 19yr olds...

violin.jpg

most of us have been there and got many t-shirts from being young with high insurance, it's one of them things, it's not something that Ollie has decided.

Sky are not alone in thinking that little 17yr old jimmy with his 130bhp go-kart isn't going to see what all the fuss is about with going fast and pushing his starlet to the limits, then when he gets his mates in the back grinning and shouting 'go faster Jimmy, Faster' that little Jimmy isn't going to bow to peer pressure and push his starlet a little faster!

if you don't like the fact that you have high insurance, tuff shit, start your own insurance company and go aginst the trend in insuring high risk kids for nothing, see how long you stay in business, or before the ombudsman says your responsible for a young driver in a Supra losing control and taking out 20 children on a school trip due to inexperiance.

[/2p] :)

Sorry might be a bit of topic
but can you put some pics and a spec up of your AW11 ollie

I have limited photos as the car is work in progress and I dont want to show the bad bits LOL : Just for you bud:

Mk1-1.jpg

Mk1.jpg

Mk1-3.jpg

UK spec AW11 converted to 3SGTE by Woodsport in Durham

Hybrid CT26 Turbo
16PSI
3" downpipe
Restrictive Exhaust
Crap Indusction kit

Rolling roaded at 13psi on the hottest day of 2007 - 224 FWHP

On a cool day with 16psi.. I'd like to think 250+

Basically work in progress... she is currently in the bodyshop having a full restoration including extended rear arches. Once I have her back she's getting a boot mount mount intercooler done as heatsoak is a really bad issue (check out the current intercooler location! )

Ran a 13.6 Quarter at Santa Pod at Japshow Finale with balding budget rear tyres and a poor start so mucho room for improvement

My other cars are a 1985 NA AW11 and a tuned Fiat Uno Turbo (Mk2)..

Yup I agree, drivers under 19 are a big risk, i wouldnt be too keen to insure them either. I see what young drivers get up too in Aberdeen each night and it just makes you cringe!!

Start on a low power car and build up some NCB!! I was driving 1.1 litre Fiestas before I even thought about buying a sports car!!
