claims stats dont lie... and we all had to start off paying high insurance premiums.. it is not something we decided over night :)

Exactly, I was 20 and my first quote was just over £1500, thats with 3 years driving experience, and 3 year ncbs.

Keep up the good work Sky, the quote you gave me was very good...now I look back on it, I think I jumped the gun with the company I'm with at the moment. Once this year is out, I will probaly getting back in touch :)

this sort of attitude always makes me laugh.

When I went to get insurance for the first time a lot of companies would not touch me because of my age.

The small minded "quick buck" attitude of such companies is something you should all bear in mind. Now that I can go to pretty much any insurance company I want I make sure to avoid the companies who turned my business down when I was younger.

There is such a thing as brand loyalty and by telling younger drivers your company doesnt want their business you leave a bad taste in their mouth.

Also to start a thread publicly on this forum with the attitude that our younger members are bothering you by asking for quotes is in my opinion the worst mistake you could make. Surely it would be good business sense to be slightly more diplomatic about it, you really dont need to tell us you are new to this game mate, it shows.

My advice to the young drivers who get turned away by companies... well in the future when you are shopping around mark the ones that turned your money down previously, probably not going to happen but if everyone young driver did this such companies would soon have to change their attitude to drivers who have as much right to be on the roads as anyone else.

Good Day,

I think people need to remember that insurance companies are just that, companies trying to make money not do you a favour and at the end of the day they can turn down who they like. You have to be aware that at 17/18 etc.. going for a hot hatch isn't going to be the easiest thing to insure. Insurance companies are out to make money and constantly take a risk when it comes to insuring the younger driver and as has already been said, you only have to look at the crash statistics etc.. to see which age group is most at risk.

no insurance company has done me any favours... Ive paid for every policy and they have made plenty of money from me.

What if Dave Burwash came on here and said "Forged Engines for Sale under 19 dont bother" because he had had a poor experience with some younger guys not paying up etc.... he is more clever than that, he would say something like "only available to people over 20" or something less arrogant

For ALL people reading this, dont ever feel like an insurance company is doing you a favour they are making huge amounts of money! HUGE!

I have no chip on my shoulder with regards to insurance companies but I can cast my mind back to when I spent hours ringing around only to be told "you are too young" and needing a car for work this almost cost me my job.

All companies operate to make a profit and I have zero problem with that and if they dont want young peoples money because they might make a slightly less profit then thats up to them but they dont have to have an attitude about it.

Anyway the original post in this thread has served its purpose and I am sure when a lot of the 19 yr olds on here turn 20 they wont "bother".

Dylan,

There is no small minded 'quick buck' attitude going on here and far as Sky insurance are concerned. We choose who to insure which is why we have the criteria which unfortunately was not being recognised by the under 19 year olds on this forum (hence my post). With heinsight perhaps the title is slightly rude, I will amend this in a moment.

We have this criteria for a reason.. statistics.
If we insure high risk drivers, they will crash and claim... then we will have to bump the premium up for all the older/experienced drivers so this is a knock-on effect. By saying no to these inexperienced drivers in the first place we keep the premiums low. Surely you can see that?
If you want to choose to ignore the companies who wouldn't insure you when you were younger then fair play for you... personally i'd like as many options as possible to keep the price down... I probably made 30+ phone calls before I paid my last insurance premium to other companies.

Thanks for your other negative comment about me personally, dont think they are called for to be honest. At the end of the the day, I am a car enthusiast employed by sky insurance to be the link between our sky and YOU the club member. I am doing this to the best of my ability.

Also, and again, general insurance rants are being posted in my direction becuase I am here a a representative on your forum.

The way young drivers moan and gripe simply shows their immaturity and inability to grasp that the majority of young drivers don't have a feckin clue how to drive/react or generally behave on the roads in a safe manner!!!!! Hence accidents and the claims that go along with them. Not to mention insurance fronting etc, pretty common from what i read here fairly often!:flame:Admittedly some older drivers shouldn't be on the roads either, but thats another issue altogether!
I'm happy that my insurance is reasonable but then,i have full and protected no claims 12 years driving experience and literally 100's of 1000's of miles under my belt with no major accidents!
Simply drive like a cock, act like a prat on the road and you will pay for it from your wallet!

i understand ya lad. im 17 but ill admit if the car goes into a slind i dont know how to get out of it. if somethin happened in front of me i dont know how id react. thats why i drive bout 50+ yards behind cars if its outside a town or city. simply put i respect my life too much too endanger it and have no respect for people that do endanger their life outside of a track or rally. rant over!!!

Ollie,

you chose to post this thread publicly and then made a couple of posts afterward. IF you think anything I have said is unjustified then we can discuss that offline or in public, I am happy to do either.

I am now in a position where money is not a hassle for me and have the luxury to go with whatever insurance company I want and surprisingly enough ethics actually enter the arguement.

I am not in the insurance game and frankly I am not interested in the metrics used to calculate risk no more than you would be interested in the ins and outs of how my business operates. If you came to me and I would not sell you a service I wouldnt blame you for not coming back, very simple.

The reality of the matter is that most people will still consider your company and others who have turned them down and thats fine but I dont have to like that and I dont have to hide my opinion on a public forum. My current insurance company give me great service and when I asked them for a quote on a supra they POLITELY told me they dont insure Supras.... I didnt take offence to that but had they public advertised "People with Supras dont bother" I would take offence to that.

Thanks for the reply.

Thats how younger or less experienced drivers should drive...cautiously. I applaud you for that,if more people drove like that then it would reduce accidents and premiums may reduce accordingly.

if my car goes into a slide or something happens in front of me i have experience in how to anticipate what to do. For example,on christmas eve a muppet stopped in the middle lane on the motorway i was on to let someone in off the slip road, that nearly caused a huge pile up in front of me! At 70ish mph theres not alot of room to react if you don't follow proper lane discipline.Fortunately i was paying attention and nipped into the 3rd lane and around it all.

To be fair Dylan, if i'd just spent 10min on the phone listening to the recorded msg, then giving my details for them to turn around and say 'we don't insure supras' i'd be more pissed off then if the company advertise that supra owners shouldn't bother!

OK, the title could of been a little less rude, but jeez some people seem to be living in another world! People may not like Statistics, but fact of the matter is, insurance companies use them, ALL car insurance companies!

They are a BUSINESS. They MAKE money, not lose it. Its not like they will NOT insure under 19 years olds, just that they wont quote them when it comes to a hot hatch like a GT or Glanza.

I fucking hate insurance as much as anyone else, dam I paid £1,500 on a 1.1 Fiesta 3RD PARTY when I first started driving! Shafted!

But I stuck with it for a few years and built up my no claims and now have a Glanza insured fully comp.

Some comments just seem a little Ignorant.

Good point man. Only thing is that my insurance company lift the phone immediately, well any time ive rang and i just give my policy number and they talk to me. At the end of the day its totally up to any business who they choose to deal with i just think sometimes a little more consideration should be shown to people. The title of the thread is changed now anyway so thats cool.
