That was how much i got quoted for £937 tpft!!!

Perfectly feasible, there are many ways to legitimately insure a car - my mates Teg is through business insurance (his dads business) and so on... (classic insurance, limited milage policies and more)
Sometimes, the combination of car, area, age, postcode, named drivers etc is just working in your favor. When i was 18, with no NCB my insurance wasbn't much different (just over or jsut under £1k - can't remember the exact figure) on my old modded GT, i also had a group 18 or 19 Xsara VTS for just £1300, with a good few mods at 18.
Just because you haven't yet found a decent quote doesn't mean it isn't out there. Sometimes i wonder if you use your brain before you post.
