If the chassis number has indeed been tampered with as the Police are stating, tell your mate to speak with the importers as that is something that should be checked against the Japanese documents, assuming the car has any.
There are 3 possibilites...
- It was tampered with in Japan, given false documents and the importers honestly didn't know.
- It was tampered with in Japan, given false documents and the importers knew.
- The importers tampered with the car when it arrived in the UK.
Either way, he should seek legal advise from a solicitor.
Your mate may also want to ask the Police how it is they know it's registered as a motorcycle despite the DVLA computer and V5 stating otherwise. If a registration check with the DVLA states that that given reg plate is an Integra, then that is what the plate is registered to. The DVLA is the
sole database for vehicle registrations, meaning that if his plate is showing as a motorbike, it is entirely possible that the plate has been duplicated (As in, there is an illegal motorcycle in the UK with the same plate reported as stolen) or that the DVLA plain fucked up. This is all bollocks though if the VIN plates have indeed been tampered with.
Go young Clueso, go investimigate! :homer:
