IMHO If it was his shims, would'nt he have poor acceleration in addition to the erratic idle? Seems more like a faulty tps as he's saying he accelerates just fine.

I'm running a Daihatsu Charade with a 4EFTE and so had to had custom drive shafts. I was facing a similar problem although i do beg your pardon if I'm off. My car used to shudder off throttle and it turned to be worn out inner Joints on the drive shaft.

Piston rings. Was any attention paid when the block was prepped before the new pistons went in? Probably still some scuffing in the liner/s..
