Yes it's the st205 rev4/5 block and you can tell by the stamp.

Looking at the vid somebody put up when he walks to the engine bay and picks the air flow meter up? only rev1&2 mr2's and early celica's have them as rev3+ mr2's and st205 have the map sensors.

lol, dude look what i replied to! You have the wrong end of the stick.

The vid you mentions is of an early st185 rev1 lump.

The 3SGTE isn't a great engine lad, you will run a serious risk going over 400hp with the block cracking in 1 of 3 problem areas, just don't bore it out by more than 0.5mm, your can get 0.25mm oversized pistons from CP, I'd even be inclined to go for them.

Will be good to see it forged up and running more power though.

Edit: I'm sure you will come on to argue with me so thought I would just add, yes I do own a 3SGTE MR2 aswell as the Starlet and the starlet pisses all over it and reliably runs over 500hp with no block cracking carryon.

not exactly true most of it is people not knowing how to build the engine or how to tune it why the block cracks. I've built over 150 high bhp 3sgte engines never had a single once fail. only time i had cracking issues was on the 955bhp drag demo car and as long as i tuned the compression ratio correctly on the engine it still lasted a whole season of drag strip action at that power.

i'd put one of my built 3sgte engines against anyones starlet engines power for power on reliabilty anyday :)

not a dig at anyone but there is alot of wrong information being posted on the years and conditions of 3sgte blocks in this post. i feel where the 3sgte is my specialist engine i should atleast correct that information for the forums knowledge credibility.

I love drivin my Mr2 Gts over starbo even though the starbo is runnin more power! (bhp),
cruzin through the twist an turns it's an essential journey... (ultimate drive) :drive:
The engine has never let me down in the last 6 years of ownin it.

its not just that yes there is a weakpoint but nothing major, no more than i've seen on any other engine. you just need to know how to tune it and creating one just under 1000bhp at 2.7bar boost pressure i think proves my point.

so your saying that of all the 3sgte engines that have been built all over the UK by many many tuners, they have all tuned them incorrectly?

It not engine failure itself it's component failure, i.e bearings, so many things could effect this,
Don't agree with the term engine failure it's always a component

not saying everyone else is wrong because cracks can happen, not just in 3sgte's but all engines ever made, its just a thing with cast iron but i've done over 150 3sgtes so far and not had cracking issues. But then again i'm cleaver with my builds, tune correctly, and not running stupid boost pressures on engines that need longevity.

Another misconception is there is no such thing as a thick and thin walled 3sgte. everyone version from the st165 celica through the mr2 and right upto the caldina ST246 and ever all versions of the 5sfe block all have exactly the same wall thickness. i've had them all at one point or another and ultra sonic tested every inch trying to find the strongest one for when we were developing the drag car.

if you want total unbreakable block just buy one of the WRC 3sgte which are still avalible. exactly the same just forged not cast so alot more dense material.

I would love to build up my 3SGTE but for what I want to do to it it just wouldn't last. Too many have cracked for it not to be true.

The late 5SFE is fair superior, the early one I can't comment on but here's a pic that should show the difference.

spuddy how far do you want to go with your 3sgte?

1000hp or as close as humanly possible but I dont wanna be swapping blocks each year.

I'd be more than willing to have a chat with you though. As it stands at the moment I have spoken to ATS about shipping me a 5sfe built motor but I'm always open to suggestions.

Ideally the 2 litre would be preferable so I can run a higher rev limiter to suit such a laggy turbo.
