Any keen welders?

Have a cracked stainless exhaust manifold sitting in the garage that I want to put back on the car as the cast ported one I have is showing signs of cracking now too.

I have a bit of experience so just looking to weld it myself but have a question about welding rods for you keen welders out there.

The manifold is T-304 stainless and I was planning on using 1.6 - 2.0mm 316 rods.

Only done wee bits and pieces with stainless before so any information appreciated!

Cheers

Not bad at all to be honest..few hairline cracks but enough to notice fuel economy dropping. Have to work all week and trying to move house as well but I'll keep you in mind. Appreciate it mate!

how will you be trying to weld it? i would do nothing other than tig welding on a manifold if you can help it.

Stick welding mate. Have used 3.0mm stainless rods with the arc welder in the past but was for a lot thicker stuff than the manifold. Good stuff thanks!

Yeah the 1.6mm will be enough for what you need for thin wall stainless like a manifold. Only trouble I would say with that is A, getting the arc started but if you've had plenty of practice it won't be much of a problem. And B, the neatness of it, stick welding isn't the neatest or prettiest of welds to look at, but certainly does the job.

Still haven't got round to this, thinking of sticking on TD04 after MOT but do you think stick welding a stainless manifold is a bad idea? I've stick welded stainless in the past with good results (mostly thick stainless though)

For a temp bodge it will be ok. But it will look terrible and won't last as long as a properly tig welded repair.
Welding thicker material is always more forgiving
