Do I need anything else?

Hey guys,

As some may know I have been gathering parts to do my turbo conversion over the last month or so. I just want to know opinions on the set-up I'm gonna be running, although I don't think it's much different to others but I just want to confirm! :p

I'm going to be buying one of Tong Turbo's Hybrid CT9s next month but for the time being I have:

SPS Mild Steel manifold
Japspeed de-cat (to be changed for screamer pipe)
HKS Actuator
Sard Bov
Greddy FMIC
Magnecore 8mm leads
Iridium spark plugs
Sard RRFPR
Hks Fcd
Kakimoto exhaust system
Cap Clutch
Boost, oil pressure, AFR and volt gauges (oil and water temp yet to come)

I want to run one bar, or even .95 with this set up. I was thinking about meshing the turbo but have decided to mount a filter behind the bumper to reduce the chances of boost creep.

How beneficial would a Apexi SAFC to me?
Do I need an uprated fuel pump/injectors?
Do I need uprated engine mounts or an engine torque damper? Or would I be okay with the stock mounts for the time being?
Do I need an uprated radiator cap?
Boost controller essential, or will I be okay with the actuator?

Any input much appreciated, I'm kinda new to the turbo scene!

I wouldnt buy the magnicore leads mate... mine fell apart shortly after purchase (if you already have them fair enough) but trying to get them replaced on gaurentee is almost impossible! should also port the wastegate on the turbo to minimse the chanse of boost creep!

Personally i wouldn't reccommend tuning based on faked air flow. You will need a walbro at least. Engine damper would help, but not required. I would get a new 1.1 cap. Boost controller helps with the creep as it monitors the levels 10 times per second and attempts to compensate. I've got no experience with tongs turbo's but my toy tuning one creeped like mad, but that's what you have to live with when dealing with a CT9. Boost controller really helps though, as its so easy to adjust boost levels with a turn of a dial. Handy for when i hit 1.3 bar in mine in the winter and was lighting the wheels up in 5th.. and browning my pants at said boost levels! But turned it back down straight away :)

I already have them mate, they've been on my N/A for a while now and are still going strong. :)

Could I still port the wastegate on a hybrid or will it already be big enough?

Sound mate cheers.

Any recommendations on which boost controller? I don't want to spend too much, as you can see I've spent a mini fortune already but I just want to do it properly now so might as well go all out! :p

So I've added a rad cap to my shopping list, when you say faked air flow, what do you mean? I missed out on a cheap Walbro, gutted!

Ahh okay then buddy makes sence to keep them :)~

Yeah think you can mate, i remeber someone saying about them getting a bit of creep with the tong, but then again its only ever been mentioned once so should be fine!

Hmm maybe that person was running an open turbo or something, well I'm gonna try to restrict the inlet a bit to prevent it!

by faked air flow he prolly means safc.
I would deffo go for an e-manage at least cause its far more usable and does the job perfect!
also rly consider about the walbro pump as the n/a one isnt the best thing to play with
this setup mate is good for around 180bhp at 1bar
what afr did u get mate?

the list of parts you have are similiar to my own setup

sps mani
sps decat
5zeigen cat back
ab88 FMIC
Magnecore 8mm leads
Iridium spark plugs
Sard RRFPR
Hks Fcd
etc.

and once its set up safely it will be fine and will boost no problem.

when you are upgrading to the hybrid i would advise on an uprated fuel pump and also i would install a safc so as the fueling can be set up perfectly.

im running the standard mounts which are ok but when funds allow i will be upgrading to trd or similar.

if you are going to be upping the boost i would upgrade the rad cap to handle the extra pressure.

boost controller isnt essential as the actuator will do its job fine but its nice to be able to have different boost levels on hand.im running the hdi one and its the easiest ebc to install and use ive seen.

hope this helps mate.

my mounts ar worn and i guess thats cos of the pedal clutch mostly.. (and driver)

so would help you if your using cap pedal clutch.

Thanks guys much appreciated.

I've had my eye on the HDi controller too, think I might get one with the optional switch.

MentalEP91 the gauge is made by Autogauge. I would get an Emanage but can't really afford it yet. 180bhp at 1 bar on a hybrid? I've seen 200 being broken with this turbo at 1 bar on more than one occassion! :D Also, as Sheldon said the N/A pump is the same as the turbo afaik. If not, I can easily get a stock 4EFTE one anyway. Will a stock 4EFTE one be okay?

Sheldon, have the worn mounts caused any cracks in your manifold or anything? I was looking at the Powerflex mounts on ebay but have heard they'll rattle the shit out of my car, I'm gonna do a search on them now infact!

Mike that's some good info cheers mate, makes me feel better your speaking from personal experience. :)

Yeah its a nice controller matey I'm looking to get one when my cars running smoothly, they've also got the 'Hi and Low' ebc's which look pretty snazzy! Stock pump can handle 1bar many people do, all depends on the duty cycle!

yes i did.. cos down pipe was not braced.. now its braced so it held fine.

engine movement will help your mani to crack :S

no need for boost controller,

i would recomend uprated engine mounts though mate, stock mounts are rubbish, and 90% of the time when you take the engine out u realise the mounts are buggered anyway.

about the safc, well it's a handy bit of kit as it will give you better afr's and pottentially more power, if u were to get a safc aswell though i would like to recomend an s-itc to go with it, they work wonders with each other, really impressed with my one,
saying that either of them arent essential, and if u were going to get them u may aswell get an emanage to be fair, mainly cos its newer and is a better bit of kit.

other than that u pretty much got everything mate.

also an uprated pump would be very beneficial, just get one from a tt supra will do the job

If I got an emanage, do I still need the FCD and RRFPR? If not, I guess I could sell those to get a contribution for the emanage!

Good man Iddy alot of people have
being waiting for this to happen!
Your own pump should be fine to
run a bar with the safc too but
if you could get an e-manege
handy it would be better than an
safc though. If your upping the
hybrid to 1.2 it would be a good
idea to maybe getting an uprated
pump to help. The HDi controller
from what seen of them there a
great job well worth the coin. :)
sorry about the writing im on my
phone.

Are you sure Sheldon?

Most manufacturers state you should/must have uprated (at least fresh) engine mounts when fitting their manifolds. I assumed the excessive twisting of the engine when accelerating/decelerating would exert force on the manifold/decat as the rest of the exhaust doesn't pivot as much. Hence the need for flexi to minimise this?

Am I completely wrong there though lol?
