Engine trouble :(

well if the gasket went between 2 cylinders, i would presume there might have been some debris left behind from the old gasket, or it was a poor qaulity gasket, or your block surface wasnt right, or the head was slightly warped lol

could be for any of those reasons really.

if it was a poor qaulity gasket it might even have been it didnt like the boost

After a look online I see that head bolts should only be fitted and torqued with 30w engine oil applied to them.

Could someone confirm either way as correct?

Cheers folks!

Dave

if the bolts that were supplied had a grease pack with them, then use the grease pack.

it doesnt have to be a 30w engine oil.

on my white starlet when i rebuilt the engine on that, i just used 10w40 engine oil, and the engine done 6k+ after @1bar boost and was fine.

this time i used the grease that was supplied,

and the bolts that came out of the engine that dave burwash built were coated with copper grease (or grease that looked similar to it)

Not yet mate, but they've been verified as ok by the garage it's at just now, and they're ok.

Any reason in particular (might mention it while the head is off you know?)

Cheers

its just it would be a shame to build it back up to find out that you needed a new piston or two. :(

its not cheap getting an engine done to that state by a garage so if it was me id pay the wee bit extra now to get the piston out and visually inspected.

deffo not the headgasket, especially if your getiting oil coming out of the breather, means your compressing the crankcase, usually because cylinder compression is getting past the rings/damaged piston.

As for copper slip on the bolts, its fine to use. a very fine smear with a brush on the threads, and a very fine smear underneath the head of the bolt. Never had a problem over hear after doing many gaskets!
