For sale section .. discussion

When people are breaking cars they obviously have lots of parts for sale - I wouldn't want to see the forum cluttered with umpteen sales thread from one person for every nut and bolt they're trying to sell.

I don't see that as a valid argument, what's the difference between having for example 30 threads from one member selling 30 items, or 30 threads from 30 members selling 1 item? They're all going to be listed in the same forum.

I'll take a look into whether updated threads in the classifieds section can be removed from the 'New Posts' listing and whether another listing can be added to show new posts in the classifieds section only.

I like to be able to use the editing function so say if an item is sold, stops me getting p.m.s months after asking if it is still for sale. If you post at the end of the thread many people don't read until the end and see the item is sold.

Moderators are checking the threads over anyways before they appear can't they just be rejected if they have not got a sensible title.

Also on UKSC when you start a thread on the for sale section the template comes up for you to fill in could this not happen on here? Would think it would the moderators life easier.

If we only had one item per thread, the thread would be locked when the item was sold and naturally fall to the bottom of the list.

AFAIK the auto template is not an option with vBulletin, UKSC use IP.Board.

The difference is with the "new posts" as you say. Obviously it's not a problem when in the classifieds forum but it would just be a pain if every page of "new posts" is from the same member or a couple with every single item listed.

glad i posted this thread now it seems there are a lot of opinions on it.

now i thin about i agree with texx.. even if one person posts loads of items, at least you know exactly what it is.

wallace glanza - i stand by your statement of the seller having to SELL their item, thats how it works.. if you want to sell it you make it look good.

hence me posting loads and loads of pictures in my for sale thread for my glanza.. i want to sell it so i have made the effort..

i think one item per thread is a great idea. its easier for everybody...

Only back online today and this makes for an interesting thread.

Not really our call on what everyone calls their threads so long as common sense is used. It's a bit like the titles in the wanted section. Some of those follow the same mindset.

If you aren't getting a response then you need to rethink your advertising folks!

few ups and downs to having 1 thread per item.

as said, loads of topics (not really a problem but more work to moderate)
the down side is a bump frenzy to stay on the first page. on the dutch starlet forum we have limited bumping to once a week and disallowed replies in the sale thread (any reply must be approved by a mod). at first it was really awkward but now it does tend to be easier to manage and an overall better/clearer/clutterfree for sale section.
if an item is sold, the topic starter posts a reply stating it's sold, a mod approves, locks.

but our forum is quite small compared to this one. might be an option to split the sale topics into more sections?

engine
drivetrain
brakes/suspention
bodywork

so that people searching for parts know where to look and can find the parts much faster.
and i would insist on clear titles :)

Its a good idea that to split the sales section up, as I myself will find it a pain after clicking one ad, then to come back out of it then to click another, and if there are 10 pages worth of new sale items in a day, I would get tired of clicking the back button and waiting for the page to load back up again.
It wouldn't be so bad if there was an option in the thread you are currently in to move up and down the threads, like hotmail with emails where you can click the arrow up and down emails in the section you are currently in.

We are currently tied into the software you see. There's a lot of features I'd love to have but I'm not the tech guy, god help you all if I were, the place would never operate.

First instinct on the splitting up idea is that it will slow things down even more. It's just another hurdle to us approving the thread if it contains more than one type of part. My feelings are that we should get the threads processed as fast as possible, anything that hinders that just leads to complaints going on previous experience. Still open to ideas though.

are all mods able to mod all forum sections? if all mods can approve the threads it would speed things along.
also an option to add a few mods.

on our forum a topic (if it's correct) will be approved within an hour or so after being posted.
but as said, a much smaller forum compared to this one. maybe 4 or 5 sale threads per day

Got to agree with texx about the idea of one item per thread, the user would have to take some initive so not just one bolt etc.

however could also do new button for new classfieds so didnt clog the new post section which i use!

Tbh it's just annoying . Also if all in one for sale thread users be keen to scroll that and oh might buy that impulse buy

I think it's really up to the poster to use their best judgement. On one hand it's easier to handle a single item per thread, on the other no-one wants to be posting multiple threads at the same time.

We are happy to moderate whatever you folks are happy with.
