Is this the beginning of the end?

Driverless Google Box

Basically a big satnav that you sit in. Still don't see how this will work in reality but no doubt they will find a way, probably at the convenience of 'regular' commuters.

Think I'll just fit mine with a mattress and grab an extra hour on the way to work in the mornings! :haha:

Anyone else see the pitfalls of this technology?

TBO its old tech but this is about controling infrastructure not just tech.

"Beware it's evil cuteness"
Probably half the speed we have now so say 1.5x more physical road capacity. Roads will be double stacked so you wont be able to stop, get out or or turn off the road unless Google is controlling all the cars at once. This is not just a smart car that you own this will ultimately be a shared vehicle.

IMO Google wants to convert your mobility so they can charge you for it.

and when these Drones fill the roads at 30kph do you think they will let you drive normal cars surely that would be unsafe ? Unless.......

At least you'd be able to drink and drive at the same time....the only way it would work perfectly would be to have only driverless cars on the roads. You may not crash into anything but something may crash into you. In a box like that you'd lose.

It is the beginning of the end for sure, but they are jus' taking baby steps. They gotta make it fool proof and failsafe, something that will take a very long time.

When they think they have perfected it, I will still never get in one. This ambitious technology is a river of fire. There will be trouble when it inevitably goes wrong.

kinda agree with everything already written,

i think if they were to catch on it would be bad.

but i can see the potential in large factories where a vehicle is necesary to get from one end to the other

I'm still of the opinion that just because we can doesn't mean we should..

That being said I can see the benefits in the technology if it were used in the right way. These are actually planned as a taxi-like system so in the likes of a city centre you could essentially remove the other traffic and use these as an alternative. However putting them on an open road with regular racers is just asking for trouble.

It's very easy to see the potential revenue from this but I'm trying not to be cynical lol.

I can't help but think of that taxi in total recall though!

Scary photo Jay that says it all. The business model is scary too it potentially takes petrol industry and car industry profits, taxi cabs, internet and pizza delivery not to mention registration ,license fees maybe even ambulances and golf buggys and thats not considering what googles miltary division are planning.

In the mean time who gets the savings and profits is playing out, should it be Google or can we choose to keep the financial benefits of the new technology as a society.

I think the 'end is neigh' because politically as tech develops it seems companies are more and more seeking to control public and personal assets rather than just making reasonable profit through business IMO we need some real checks and balances.

Still hoping for a nuclear option - The ford nucleon 1958 concept for example with the atomic reactor over the back wheels for better traction.

With the tech in cars and they way things are going, there will be self drive cars on the e road in 5-10 years.
