Well he was never going to contribute anything further to the work he had already done, he doesn't need to be still 'IN' music to continue to have an effect ON music - his work is out there. Despite the fact he may not have been up to the task of his announced tours, I think his finances left him with no choice but to do so.
The only loss is that a person has lost their life, because everything else of him will remain (There are few people who are not totally forgotten), but perhaps his history indicates he might well be lucky to live as long as he did.
Lets face it, he's spent 40 years doing everything he had dreamed about. But he also spent 10 years having a non existant childhood (Which may explain some of his later actions), the man never had a chance to lead a normal life from a young age, probably the cause of his destruction. He never grew up.
I find it amazing how some people can be "genious" in some respects (Music in this case), but significantly limited or backward in almost every other way.
