You were fined but rightly so, I never had any problems in MK with any police using normal Jap plates.

Plate stuck on the inside of the window will earn you a pull from the traffics in no-time. My plate fell off and within 10mins i was stopped and every time it fell off after then. Then i decided to use those regi plate fixers that screw into the bumper.

i have been done 3 times at £30 a time now, they seem to make up their own rules sometimes as i said to one that being an import it is allowed 79mm letters not 89 mm and he said thats rubbish so i whipped out the dvla guide the first copper gave to me and proved him wrong he wasnt happy! got a fine cos it was in the window then, PRICKS

I got pulled once for having a motorbike size plate on my car which IS illegal. I than changed it after speaking to DVLA and put a Jap size plate on the front. I then got pulled a week later by the same policeman and his mate. I showed him that the plate had been signed as ok and legal by my local MOT station (a requirement by them from the first stop) I also had the old plate in my car to show them i had in fact changed the plate, i argued that the DVLA had said my new plate was legal and the first policeman was prepared to let it go. However the other arsehole started getting stroppy and said he had never heard of anything such as different size plates for jap cars in over 25 years of being a policeman. I told him that maybe he should know his job better which i dont think he really liked, he then took all my details and said he would check it out and if i was wrong he would have me for it, but nothing ever came of it.

If you speak to DVLA they will say that being an import it is allowed 79mm letters not 89 mm on the front, this is due to the fact that a lot of imports have various aftermarket fronts/ bumpers fitted and you are allowed to fit 79mm letters and a smaller plate if it means that you do not have the room to fit a standard size 89mm plate on that bumper.

You can argue that by fitting a standard size plate as you have now done it will interfer with the cooling of the car/ intercooler and you therefore can put a 79mm size plate on it legally. The DVLA also told me that there is no legal requirement specified on their legislation about having a white border around the letters, when i queried it with them they actually said i did not need to put any border around the lettering at all although i did just to be extra safe( I also pointed this out to the two policemen).

As said though its a tricky one to argue and sometimes just too much hassle.
